Monday, the Savannah State University community gathered to officially swear in Chief Torrance Garvin as Chief of Police.

As Chief Garvin reflected on his journey, he shared memories of being a 7-year-old on Savannah State's campus. Today, he returns in a new capacity—as a leader dedicated to serving and protecting the university community that helped shape him.

His remarks centered on the power of relationships, the importance of community, and a message that resonates deeply with Tigers everywhere: you can get anywhere from here.

Chief Garvin spoke of fostering an environment where students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors feel safe, supported, and connected—a commitment that will guide his leadership as he begins this next chapter at Savannah State.

Just weeks after welcoming a delegation from Ghana in partnership with Mayor Van Johnson, the City of Savannah, and the Savannah World Trade Center, Savannah State University was proud to host representatives from the Netherlands on campus yesterday.

These visits are more than meetings—they’re opportunities to build relationships, exchange ideas, and create pathways that benefit our students, faculty, and community. As Savannah’s University, we’re committed to ensuring our Tigers are connected to opportunities that reach far beyond our campus borders.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day to reflect on the meaning of freedom, honor the resilience of those who endured injustice, and recognize the progress made through generations of perseverance and determination.

As Georgia's first public HBCU, Savannah State University proudly carries forward a legacy rooted in opportunity, education, and service. Today, we honor those who came before us, celebrate the strength of our community, and recommit ourselves to building a brighter future for generations to come.
