Celebrating a remarkable legacy of leadership and service. 💙🐯

During the quarterly meeting on May 30, the Savannah State University Foundation Board of Directors recognized nine members for their years of dedicated service and lasting contributions to Savannah State University.
We proudly honor Dr. Willis Blake, Dr. Patricia Harris, Mr. John Kelley, Commissioner Bobby Lockett, Ms. Glennera Martin, Mr. Ronald McGee, Mr. Julius Smith, Mr. Emanuel Larkin, Jr., and Dr. Daniel Stevenson for their steadfast leadership, advocacy and commitment to advancing the mission of Savannah State University.

Their collective impact has strengthened the Foundation, expanded opportunities for our students and helped shape a brighter future for generations of Tigers. As we celebrate the completion of their terms of service, we thank them for the time, talent and passion they have shared with our university community.

Savannah State University is grateful to receive a $5,000 gift from the Savannah (GA) Chapter of The Links, Inc. in support of an endowed scholarship that has impacted SSU students for more than 20 years.

This continued investment helps remove financial barriers and create opportunities for students to thrive academically, lead boldly and serve their communities.

Tiger Trailblazer spotlight 🐯✨

Congratulations to Dr. Otilia Iancu on being awarded the Liberty Bell Award by the Savannah Bar Association — a recognition honoring individuals who make meaningful contributions to their community through education, service and leadership.

The announcement was made by Judge Chris Middleton, with remarks from SSU MPA alum and Chatham County Commissioner Aaron “Adot” Whitely.

In true Tiger fashion, Dr. Iancu dedicated the award to her APLES students, sharing that they continue to inspire her to do meaningful and positive work every day.

Savannah State University has announced a historic $42.8 million state investment — the largest capital project initiative in university history — bringing major campus enhancements including a new Wellness Center, King-Frazier expansion, and a future Marsh Walk Plaza & Amphitheater.

Big things are happening at Savannah State. 🐯✨

Today, we celebrated a historic $42.8 million state investment — the largest capital project initiative in university history — that will transform our campus for students, alumni, and the entire community.

From a new Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium to renovations at Tiger Arena and King-Frazier, plus a future Marsh Walk Plaza & Amphitheater overlooking our beautiful waterfront campus, this investment is about more than buildings. It’s about creating spaces that strengthen the student experience, bring alumni back home to campus, and create new opportunities for connection, celebration, and community for generations to come.

As President Whirl shared, this historic investment reflects what’s possible when leaders across the region and state come together with a shared commitment to student success and the future of higher education.

Savannah State is deeply grateful for the advocacy, partnership, and belief from our legislative leaders, campus community, alumni, and supporters — especially the generations of Tigers whose pride, voices, and continued investment in their alma mater helped pave the way for moments like this and continue pushing Savannah’s University forward.

Savannah State University will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. All administrative offices will be closed and no classes will be held. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, May 26 at 8:00 a.m.

As we pause for this day of remembrance, we encourage the SSU community to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
