Beyond the Jersey ISSUE 25:
Third-year student-athlete Brooklyn Sheridan has experienced college life across three Penn State campuses while balancing athletics and academics. Originally from Houston, Texas, Sheridan plays both volleyball and softball while pursuing her nursing degree.
Sheridan first came to Pennsylvania to continue her volleyball career while earning a Penn State education. She began her college journey at Penn State Harrisburg, where she played volleyball and majored in kinesiology. During her sophomore year, she transferred to Penn State Mont Alto to begin her nursing education while continuing volleyball.
After campus closures during her sophomore year, Sheridan transferred again to Penn State Schuylkill, where she continued volleyball, pursued her nursing degree, and was introduced to softball. Although the transition between campuses was difficult at first, Sheridan said building routines and getting involved in student life helped her adjust.
“The transition was uncomfortable at first, but once I started a routine and got involved in student life, I met people that made it easier,” Sheridan said.
As an out-of-state athlete, Sheridan said one of the greatest benefits has been learning independence and becoming more self-sufficient. However, being far from loved ones during important moments and special occasions has also been one of the biggest challenges.
For students considering attending school far from home, Sheridan encourages them to get involved early and stay consistent with routines. “Don’t isolate in your room,” she said. “Consistency helps a new place start feeling like home.” She also reminded students that “missing home does not mean you made the wrong decision.”
Outside of academics and athletics, Sheridan shared a fun fact about herself: she loves cruises and has been on 30 cruises.
