Beyond the Jersey ISSUE 27:

Freshman student-athlete Miranda Morrstatt made an immediate impact in her first season of flag football, earning ECAC Rookie of the Year honors despite coming from a softball background.

Having played softball her entire life, Morrstatt was looking for a new challenge when she arrived at college. Since flag football was not offered at her high school, she saw it as an opportunity to step outside of her comfort zone and try something different.

“Flag football wasn’t offered at my high school, so I was excited to try something new,” Morrstatt said.

Adjusting to the sport came with challenges, as it was unlike anything she had played before. However, she credited her teammates with helping make the learning process easier and creating an environment where she could grow and improve.

One of the biggest lessons Morrstatt learned during her first season was how to enjoy the experience without putting too much pressure on herself. She explained that she often focused on performing well for both herself and her teammates, but over time she learned to simply have fun and enjoy competing alongside her friends.

While earning ECAC Rookie of the Year was a major accomplishment, Morrstatt said the moments that stand out most are the memories she made with her teammates. Whether it was game days or van rides, she said every experience was different and helped bring the team closer together.

“Every game and van ride was different, but we always had so much fun playing,” Morrstatt said.

Receiving the Rookie of the Year award came as a surprise to Morrstatt, who viewed the honor as a reflection of the support she received from those around her.

“Earning Rookie of the Year was a great honor that I wasn’t expecting,” she said. “I wouldn’t have earned this award without the help of my teammates.”

Outside of athletics, Morrstatt is a proud dog owner and has two dogs named River and Rascal.
