Pictures can tell a powerful story. Our ongoing drone work in Southern California is helping document long-term changes in coastal habitat in the region. The first photo depicts a large group of ochre Seastars foraging on intertidal mussels in 1973 near Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach. The second photo depicts the same location in the intertidal in 2026 devoid of seastars and mussels. The remaining two photos show the location relative to the larger intertidal bench. Images are helping provide a better understanding of how much the coastal environment in Southern California has changed over the last 50 years.
