We’d like to “paws” here to express appreciation for our community this . By giving to priorities like our Student Success Fund, you’re supporting current and future students and helping to ensure the Allen School is a place where every student feels that they can belong and thrive. Here’s how your support translates into impact:

– In Winter 2026 alone, our K-12 outreach team worked with 14 high schools and community-based organizations to serve more than 500 youth through field trips, school visits and tabling events.

– Since 2021, we’ve served over 150 students through Changemakers in Computing, a free summer program open to all rising juniors and seniors at Washington state high schools that aims to increase the participation of economically disadvantaged and/or future first-generation college students in computing. Of the CiC alumni who went on to apply to the UW for college, 90 have been admitted — including 39 CiC students directly admitted to the Allen School.

– Also since 2021, we’ve served over 180 students in our Allen Scholars program, a one-year cohort-based program that focuses on supporting emerging leaders from first generation, low-income, and underserved communities from Washington state who are pursuing a degree in computer science or computer engineering.

Check out what the Allen Scholars program has meant to participating students in the accompanying graphic, and thank you for your support! There’s still plenty of time to contribute — and we're just two gifts away from unlocking another $1,000 in challenge funds! 💜 https://bit.ly/hgd-allen-school

Having the opportunity to pursue a UW education…Gaining hands-on experience in research…Getting involved in student organizations, startups, mentorship and so much more…

Every student should have the opportunity to excel academically while pursuing their passions. Undergraduate scholarships help ensure that an Allen School education — and all of the opportunities that come along with it — remains within reach of students regardless of their means. University of Washington President Robert J. Jones has expressed that his vision for UW is to enable all WA students to graduate debt free. Challenge accepted — and we're already nearing our first 10 gifts to unlock extra funds for Allen School scholarships! Let's go! bit.ly/hgd-allen-school

Congratulations to 's six honorees: undergraduate students Maya Falodia, Krisha Khandelwal, Aybala Turkarslan, Jiaqi Wang, and Kevin Wang, and master’s student Andrew Shaw (B.S., ‘25)!

Each year, the Husky 100 recognizes 100 undergraduate and graduate students from across all three campuses who are making the most of their time at the University of Washington. By connecting what they are learning through their coursework, research, internships, and campus and community engagement, each student is creating their own unique .

On April 23, we’re setting our sights on 100 gifts to support scholarships, fellowships, and programs designed to engage more students in computing education and careers and support their academic and personal success. But you can help get our University of Washington campaign off on the right paw, right now, during early giving. Gifts of any size will help us to unlock additional challenge funds and get us closer to our goal! 🐾💜 bit.ly/hgd-allen-school

Could smart earbuds provide a less intrusive, more privacy-preserving alternative to smart glasses? Researchers in University of Washington ’s Mobile Intelligence Lab led by professor Shyam Gollakota developed VueBuds, the first system that incorporates tiny cameras into off-the-shelf wireless earbuds to allow users to chat with an AI model about the scene in front of them. Similar to Meta glasses, VueBuds can translate signs in foreign languages, act as an aid for low-vision wearers, or identify plant species during a hike — but they take only still images (not video), transmit them for processing locally on a smartphone or other device (instead of sending and storing them in the cloud), and the user can delete the images immediately after they’re done. The team earned an honorable mention at ACM - Association for Computing Machinery ACM SIG CHI this week for their work. https://www.washington.edu/news/2026/04/14/cameras-in-wireless-earbuds-vuebuds/

As the director of the Makeability Lab, University of Washington professor and alum Jon Froehlich (Ph.D., ‘11) utilizes human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence to tackle a range of issues. His research has helped improve city planning and sidewalk infrastructure around the globe through Project Sidewalk, and he also has developed technologies that enable blind and low-vision users to prepare meals, participate in sports and even engage with children’s artwork. This week at , Froehlich received the ACM - Association for Computing Machinery ACM SIG CHI Societal Impact Award for his work.

As the director of the Allen School’s Makeability Lab, Allen School professor and alum Jon Froehlich (Ph.D., ‘11) utilizes human-computer interaction (HCI) and machine learning to tackle high-impact socially relevant problems. Already, his work has led to improved city planning and sidewalk infr...
