🐾Our UW-REN Project Symposium was held today! 🥳 There we were able to discuss and present our group's accomplishments all thanks to the fantastic volunteers who made this restoration project a reality! 💚😊 Accordingly, our group would like to thank all those who have taken part in this project, as your contributions have been invaluable! We'd also like to thank our amazing Client, Tom Kelly, who has made it so that these volunteer events and this project as a whole was able to take place and be as effective as it was! In addition, we want to thank our Professors, Dr. Gold (UW Bothell), Dr. Updegrave (UW Tacoma), and Dr. Fridley (UW Seattle) for instructing our group throughout these past 8-months and giving us the best advice and input regarding this projects design, approach, and implementation! 📃Moreover, we want to thank Chloe from SER-UW Nursery and Eric Sterner for coordinating and organizing the acquisition of the 236 native plants we were able to install! 🌱🌲 Despite this capstone course reaching a close on June 11th, restoration events and continued stewardship of the site will remain ongoing (with an event taking place tomorrow!). If you are interested in taking part in the stewardship and continued restoration of this, as well as other sites within the greater Seattle area, please visit the link below! 🥾⛏

What a beautiful day for restoration in Magnuson park! Our hard-working volunteers and Anisha worked on building a thorny barrier between the sand point head north slope site’s southern edge and the Cross Park Trail. The purpose of the barrier is to discourage animal and human disturbance so that the newly installed plants can thrive. We also cleaned up some re-emerging invasive Himalayan blackberry and Canadian thistle. In order to retain moisture and protect newly installed plants, we also replenished mulch rings. We appreciate the seattle community’s support on our effort, please visit https://www.greenseattle.org/get-involved/volunteer/ to learn about our upcoming events!

Notably today Tony, one of our volunteers, mechanically removed a huge invasive Scotch broom from outside of our site! This species easily invades natural areas and forest lands. We can see this invasive species that is covered in golden yellow flowers in spring and summer near Kite hill. 💚Along with Hamoon, Bora, Tony and our client Tom Kelly, efforts have been continued removing re-emeging invasive species and watering the newly planted vegetation. 🌱⛏Invasive removal is intended for the following events to come, so if you are interested taking part in this, restoring other sites within the greater Seattle areas, please visit the link below!

Thank you so much to all who came out and helped to mulch, plant, and remove invasives this past weekend! 💚On the 1st Bora, Anisha, and volunteers helped to place mulch rings around newly established plants! Then, on the 2nd, Hailey, Hamoon, and volunteers continued this work and finished planting efforts by planting the last six thimbleberry shrubs! 🌱Not to mention, the placement of container cup barriers that day around some of the baldhip rose, salal and dull Oregon grape has helped to mitigate the threat of rabbit herbivory, which is a present danger as many cute rabbits have been found within our site 🐇. While this threat is being mitigated with physical barriers, we still need to remove resurging Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, and oneseed hawthorn! If you are interested in helping us with this invasive removal, or in restoring other sites within the greater Seattle area, please visit the link below!🥾🧤https://www.greenseattle.org/get-involved/volunteer/

🤎🌳 Notably today one of our fantastic volunteers mechanically removed a huge invasive Sweetbriar rose from outside of our site! This species spreads easily via suckers and layering and can dominate areas within several years. Therefore, we greatly value all the hard work put into preventing this species from spreading to our site as well as to other areas within Magnuson park! 🏞💚
