The Sikh Student Association of UW hosted our 5th Annual 1984 Exhibition ‘Roots of Rebellion’ 🧡💙

Each year, students organize a banner walkthrough in the heart of campus, which outlines the Sikh religion, our history, and what led up to the events on 1984. Students, professors, and anyone walking through Red Square gets a chance to learn about the Indian state’s Genocide on Sikhs. For most people, this is their first and only oppurtunity being exposed to this knowledge.

The banners are accompanied by an art exhibition of Sikh artists across the world, a gatka akhara hosted by Washington Gatka Dal, and langar seva ⚔️🖼️🍪

Thank you to everyone who came and to all those who helped in this year’s exhibition. We couldn’t have done it without the help of these sevadars 🙏

Most importantly, let us remember the sacrifices made by those who came before, and let them inspire us to carry our part in pushing the Panth forward.

Join UW SSA for our annual 1984 Art and Walkthrough Exhibition: “Roots of Rebellion” on May 21st from 9am to 2pm to gain knowledge about the events of the 1984 Sikh Genocide, honor our shaheeds, and the lives lost during this time. 🌸🌼

We seek to provide a deeper historical and political context into past, current, and ongoing forms of violence, oppression, and genocide perpetrated by the Indian government against the Sikh community, and highlight the resistance, resilience, and rebellion displayed by our shaheeds that bravely laid down their lives for our sikh kaum and community. 💙
This exhibit will take place at Red Square at the University of Washington. We will be featuring a 25-poster Walkthrough showcasing a detailed look at the history of the events leading up to 1984, and depicting the ruthless consequences continuing to this day. We will also be featuring an elaborate art gallery displaying history and rebellion through craftsmanship, hosting a langar seva open to everyone, and a gatka akhara by Washington Gatka Dal where our Singhs and Kaurs will display, showcasing the spirit of “Sant-Sipahi” (Saint-Soldier), an idea started by Sri Guru Hargobind Ji, who balanced the value of deep spiritual wisdom with having the courage to fight against injustice.
UW SSA encourages you all to come out and support, learn, and bring your non-sikh friends, professors, colleagues, and peers to spread awareness and education about Sikhi. Stay tuned, and we hope to see you there!!!
