We are pleased to welcome Professor Hannah Lewis from the University of Texas, Austin, to the School of Music on Friday, May 8 for her talk, "Nostalgia in the 21st Century Film Musical," in this installment of the THEME Lecture series. Today we will have two presenters from the UW ethnomusicology program: Shahin Shahbazi and Rayne Mescallado. As always, the talks will take place at 1:30pm in rm. 219.

First, Shahin Shahbazi will present a talk titled "The Historical Trajectory of Radif and Dastgah In Iranian Classical Music."

Then Rayne Mescallado will present "Localizing Western Influences in the Development of a Nationalistic Filipino Music."

This Friday, Gwynne Brown, Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Puget Sound, will be giving a talk titled "William L. Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony: Complicating the Narrative of Rediscovery."

Healing Heart Project at UW: The UW Symphony and soloist Adia tsi sʔuyuʔaɫ Bowen perform Bruce Ruddell's "The Healing Heart of the First People of this Land" this Friday, February 6 at Meany Hall in a special collaboration by UW Ethnomusicology, American Indian Studies, and Lushootseed Research Foundation's Healing Heart Project. Originally commissioned by upper Skagit elder Vi taqʷšəblu Hilbert in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to "bring healing to a sick world," the symphony is preceded by a screening of the documentary film, "The Healing Heart of Lushootseed." Admission is FREE to this special community event, and it all gets under way at 7:30 pm. More details at the link. All are welcome! University of Washington Symphony Orchestra

Please join us for the Cascade Song Festival at UW this weekend! Full program available at https://cascadesongfestival.org/

Coming up Jan. 15-18 at the School of Music: Cascade Songfest, a weekend devoted to the study and performance of song.

Organized by faculty from the UW and University of Oregon, the conference includes a recital and master class by the internationally acclaimed soprano Louise Toppin and a keynote presentation by music theorist Matt BaileyShea. Festival opens on Thursday, Jan. 15, 4:45 pm at the UW Intellectual House with a Live Music Jukebox, and continues throughout the weekend with paper presentations, sessions, and performances.
