Each resident at UW Dermatology enters our program with a heart for patient care and an eagerness for hands-on learning. There is one critical tool that residents use on day one – a dermatoscope. This essential tool allows residents to understand and identify skin conditions such as melanoma.

🔬🪅 Big congratulations to Haroldo Rodriguez, PhD student and member of the , on the successful defense of his dissertation titled “Characterizing the Role of Tumor-Specific B Cells in Merkel Cell Carcinoma Disease Control!"

Haroldo conducted his research under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Nghiem, Director of the MC3 Institute, and Dr. Justin Taylor from the University of Virginia.

His defense took place on Thursday, October 9, in the Brotman Auditorium and was followed by a joyful celebration with family, friends, colleagues, and mentors—complete with cake and piñata.

Earlier this month, UW Dermatology hosted our annual Robert A. Pommerening Memorial Lecture, bringing together more than 40 in-person and virtual attendees from across our dermatology community. Thank you to all who joined us! 💜

We were honored to welcome Ilona Frieden, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Frieden shared an insightful and inspiring talk, “Field Notes of a ‘Hemangioma Watcher.’”

🎉🔬 Congratulations to Dr. Cory Simpson, who has received a two-year, $600,000 grant from the to advance his lab’s research on disease (HHD) — a rare genetic skin blistering disorder with no FDA-approved treatments.

This new funding will allow the to build on unexpected and promising findings from their human tissue model of HHD, honed by PhD student Jessica Ayers, and explore a signaling pathway that may offer a new therapeutic target to stop blistering and infections.
