Plugged In: Where Engineering Meets Adventure
At the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the Innovation Lab makerspace is redefining what it means to be an engineer and a makerspace. It’s not just a lab and makerspace; it’s a social hub where creativity, music, robotics, and technology collide to create a genuine sense of adventure.

A Community in Motion
The atmosphere is open and driven by shared experiences. On any given day, you’ll find students leading STEM Outreach workshops for local high schools and community colleges, singing and playing guitars/instruments, or simply hanging out as new projects take shape. The makerspace is a design center built on the idea that engineering should be active, social, and—most importantly—adventurous.

Engineering Your Adventure
That spirit of exploration extends beyond the lab. Students organize and head out together for a day in the city, starting with a walk through the iconic sights and sounds of Pike Place Market before catching the Bainbridge Island ferry for a trip across the Sound to catch lunch or coffee. It’s a space where engineering becomes part of everyday life’s adventure—a mix of friendship, local exploration, and hands-on creation where we build memories as often as we build circuits.

This quarter, Embedded Systems students showcased their robotic creations—bringing a chaos on wheels to their demos.
The Main Event: 21 Unique Student Designed Robots!

* Mad Max Cliff Maze: Chaos with Purpose
* Autonomous Line-Following Maze Competition -Fastest Time Wins.

Embedded systems design is about building real product hardware that works in the physical world. It is the practice of applying theory to products that are manufactured, powered on, and expected to behave reliably.
Accomplishments: Schematic and Board (PCB) Layout, Sensors, Motor & Drivers, Debugging Tools, Autonomous & Remote Phone Control Coding, and taking home what they’ve designed!

It all started when I noticed one ECE student carrying a guitar into the makerspace.

Naturally… that couldn’t be the only one. So, I added a couple more guitars, and before long, talented ECE musicians and vocalists started emerging from behind the oscilloscopes and signal generators. And just like that… Bandwidth was born.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the tragic passing of Vitali Siumbeli on February 15. Vitali, who graduated from Seattle University in 2017 with a BS in Electrical Engineering, is fondly remembered throughout our department as a kind and genuine person, devoted to learning, and a loyal friend to many in the Seattle University community. His presence touched the lives of classmates, faculty, and staff alike, and he will be deeply missed.

Oh what a Networking Night! A big turn out of ECE students enjoyed a fantastic keynote speech from Mary Jesse, followed by some real-life networking with industry professionals. A big thanks to our student IEEE team for their help in organizing this annual event.

The ECE Advisory Board and IEEE are presenting their premiere student event on Monday, February 2nd. The annual ECE Networking Night is a wonderful opportunity to meet with industry professionals who could play an integral role in your near future careers, so we highly encourage attendance from all students at any year in their studies. Networking is a skill that needs developing, and this is your opportunity to do so in a supportive environment. Here are some statistics about networking:

Up to 70% of jobs are never publicly listed - they are filled through existing contacts
Up to 85% of jobs are filled with an applicant who had prior connection with someone at the hiring company
Over 60% of mentor relationships are developed as a result of networking

Innovation Lab Makerspace Hosts Multi-College Electronics Design Workshop
The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department’s Innovation Lab Makerspace STEM Outreach program recently hosted a hands-on Electronics Circuit Board Art & Design Workshop, welcoming nine guests, including faculty and students from other institutions, one high-school student, and a proud parent not wanting to miss out on the fun too.
Participants used professional engineering tools to design custom electronic circuit boards, transforming schematics into physical products ready for manufacturing. The session emphasized practical, creative engineering work—allowing participants to design real technology rather than assemble pre-made kits. All boards designed during the workshop in December were sent for professional manufacturing, with students returning in January to assemble and take home their finished products. Nine boards where designed and manufactured.
The workshop also served as preparation for the next upcoming free embedded robotics trainer series planned for late winter, where participants will design and take home their own robotic systems.
Innovation Lab Makerspace workshops highlight how Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seattle University combines hands-on design, creativity, and real-world engineering experience for students at all stages while sharing the inhouse developed technologies with other institutions.

The ECE Innovation Lab Makerspace STEM Outreach Program had a packed week, leading hands-on workshops at Seattle Central and Highline College. In just two days, more than 60 engineering students assembled circuit boards designed by our own ECE students and staff. Along the way, they learned about Seattle University, explored the world of electrical and computer engineering, and took home their own light-up electronic creations!
