Biology faculty members Drs. Becky Hartley and Mark Jordan attended the Seas to Summits joint meeting of the local chapters of the American Fisheries Society and The Wildlife Society in Wenatchee earlier this quarter along with several student researchers.

Hartley attended the conference with student researchers Tarini Rapelly, Kayli Williams, Ava Lauer and Ash Stinnett, who presented two posters focused on Bushtit vocalizations. For their research project, they recorded, classified and quantified vocalizations associated with parental incubation swaps and adult feeding visits to audible nestlings.

Jordan attended the conference with student researchers Rebecca Mulvihill and Kai Aiona-Agra. Jordan presented a poster comparing methods for modeling urban wildlife habitat using data from camera traps and community reporting. Mulvihill presented research examining the effects of urban forest restoration on mammal biodiversity, while Aiona-Agra shared work on the impact of flyers at libraries and community centers on engagement with an urban wildlife reporting website. The project was originally initiated by Carissa Caulton (CEEGR ’25).

The conference also offered opportunities to reconnect with Seattle University Biology alumni working across the region in wildlife conservation, natural resources and environmental research.

Congratulations to the student teams who presented at this year’s National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), the largest multidisciplinary undergraduate research conference in the nation!

* Alice Han and Angela Han, “Collaborative Urban Walkability Assessment Using Large Language Models and Environmental Analytics Module.” Faculty mentor: Dr. Wan Bae.

* Kenny Nguyen, Tony Nguyen, and Nathan Tran, “Multi-Modal Apple Detection - Combining 3D LiDAR and RGB analysis for Precision Orchard Yield Estimation.” Faculty mentor: Dr. Wan Bae.

* Angela Han and Alice Han, “Optimizing Pedestrian Routes Through an Integrated Walkability Cost Framework.” Faculty mentor: Dr. Wan Bae.

* Atticus Slosson and Jackson Steiner, “Development of a Method for Selective Retention of Fragrance Components on Activated Carbon: Implications for Volatile Organic Compound Preservation.” Faculty mentor: Dr. Kristen Skogerboe.

Students were also supported by campus coordinator, Prof. Tara Roth, in the Office of Undergraduate Research, the College of Science and Engineering and the Lemieux Library.

Congratulations to Phillip Thompson, PhD, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Seattle University, on being selected as a 2026–2027 Fulbright U.S. Scholar. As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Thompson will work with faculty and students at Chiang Mai University in Thailand on two community service projects.

The team will develop recommendations for the country on how drinking water treatment systems can be positioned in communities affected by natural disasters. On-site access to water is preferable to relying on bottled water, which presents logistical challenges and generates waste.

The team will also collaborate with farmers to develop a method for producing consistently reliable liquid fertilizer, known as “compost tea.” The goal is to create a scalable technology that improves crop yields while taking advantage of nutrient recycling.

Both projects build on Dr. Thompson’s previous work in building water treatment and aquaponic systems and his involvement with community projects in Thailand spans two decades.

“I’m grateful to be selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar and look forward to working with my colleagues in Thailand next year,” said Dr. Thompson.

During spring break, Drs. John Carter and Ariana Mendible led a group of 12 College of Science and Engineering students on a study abroad experience in Chile as part of Carter’s course on Mathematical Models of Near-Shore Phenomena.

Established in 2012, the program reflects a longstanding partnership between Seattle University and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC). Students studied mathematical models for the evolution of surface waves in the ocean along with Chilean culture during winter quarter at Seattle University before traveling to Chile over spring break, where they learn from Chilean experts while based in the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at PUC in Santiago.

The group also visited Federico Santa María Technical University and attended talks and minicourses on tsunami modeling, tidal-energy extraction and sediment transport. In addition to academic programming, students explored museums, restaurants, parks and the Andes Mountains. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Chilean Navy’s Tsunami Warning Center in Valparaíso and the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago.

Seattle University is preparing to transition from a quarter system to a unified semester calendar beginning with the 2027 academic year. For students who rely on Disability Services, this change will make a real difference.

Disability Services works with students who need exam accommodations, assistive technology, note taking support, flexible attendance and other adjustments. Under the quarter system, those supports must be set up fast, while classes are already moving at full speed.

A semester calendar changes that rhythm. Students go through the accommodation setup process fewer times each year and once those supports are in place, they stay in place longer. A longer semester also gives students more time to recover, meet with professors and adjust curriculum plans before final grades are set.

The move to semesters is giving students something simple but important—more time, more stability and more chances to stay on track.
