We are halfway to our goal and grateful to all of you who have contributed to our students' success - today and always! As 2005 M.A. alum Matthew Wilson shares, students, alums, faculty and staff recognize that we are prepared "to think about urgent social and environmental issues with an openness that the next steps are not one size fits all!" We hope you will join us with your gift to the department at tinyurl.com/HGDgeog2023

Since joining the Department of Geography in autumn 2019, Professor Bo Zhao has been creating opportunities for both undergraduate- and graduate students to engage in collaborative, cutting edge research. Professor Zhao is the founder and director of the Humanistic GIS (geographic information systems) Laboratory, a space for exploring โ€œDigital Earth as the home of humankind.โ€ Countless students have participated in research with the HGIS Lab, and 70% of the lab's undergraduate researchers receive compensation for their work. The lab hopes to increase that number and is actively seeking funding to support those who volunteer. Additionally, most lab graduates are accepted into highly regarded GIS or data science programs around the country. Visit the Department of Geography website to find more impacts from the HGIS Lab and check out tinyurl.com/HGDgeog2023 to make a gift today!

Thank you very much to Geography Interim Administrator Kendall Nelson for contributing this article!

This year the Department of Geography welcomed a new undergraduate advisor, Drew Gamboa! Drew has brought warmth and humor to the Advising Office, and values the department's commitment to reciprocity, community service and environmental and social justice. In addition to advising, Drew teaches a professional development class for undergraduate geographers, making the process of getting a job more transparent and helping students find ways to articulate their experiences to employers. Our biggest congratulations go out to undergraduate Kels Rizzo, recipient of the Halmo Geography Scholarship for 2022-2023! No stranger to social justice advocacy in their education and career, Kels enrolled at the University of Washington with the goal of "mov[ing] through spaces with camp ground rules 'leave it better than you found it.'" On the Department of Geography website, Kels describes the fantastic work they are doing to improve the UW campus with their project "Expanding Reproductive Healthcare at UW Seattle." Undergraduate Program Director Bo Zhao calls Kels's project "an important initiative for increasing access to necessary healthcare services on campus." Find the full article linked below!
