🎓 Alex Guerrero Villatoro marked off 15 feet of bleachers for his family at graduation. Only his older brother could be there. The rest of his family — his parents and three younger siblings — watched from 3,000 miles away in Guatemala, after his parents were deported.

Alex is one of many students in Whatcom and Skagit counties navigating the trauma of family separation.

💔 Advocates are raising the alarm about the lasting mental health impacts on young people whose families have been fractured. Grief, anxiety, and fear don’t end at the school gate.

Students like Alex deserve celebration, support, and care — and so do the many others carrying unseen burdens to the graduation stage.

Zeferino helped establish new state standards to protect farmworkers from grueling heat in the fields and had a hand in a 2021 state law guaranteeing overtime pay for them. Zeferino has fought for basic improvements like added restrooms. He’s coached workers on how to talk to lawmakers, and is quick to jump on the picket line with first time strikers to show them how it’s done.
