Hello fellow SKPC members! Hope you are well and finding ways to enjoy the summer with your child in spite of the various lockdown measures. 🌞
As some of you may have heard, UW President Ana Mari Cauce recently spoke with WA Governor Jay Inslee during a press conference regarding the higher education outlook this fall. While UW’s plans are not final, she did say reduced density is a big component of returning to campus. Reduced density would obviously impact class size and structure, dining facilities and housing arrangements, both in the dorms and the Greek System. Specifically, President Cauce said sororities and fraternities would be held to a maximum of 50% capacity.
In response, Sigma Kappa House Corp President Maggie Morris provided the statement below. Hopefully this initial commentary will help alleviate some of the concerns current members have regarding housing availability and options. While more official guidance will be forthcoming, I’m sure we all appreciate House Corp’s commitment to the health and well-being of the Chapter.
Stay tuned and go Dawgs! 💜💛
Hi all,
Sigma Kappa has been working with university officials and other experts in order to determine plans for fall quarter. From bed placement, to food service, to bathroom usage, we are are considering all options available to us.
Right now, what the sororities are waiting for is clarity from UW about new members and whether or not some of them will be expected to move in on bid day. This is what is preventing us from making concrete plans and communicating more clearly with members and parents.
Having said that, we believe we will have the space to house all returning members who have signed contracts for next year and wish to live in. These members, however, will be expected to abide to by additional safety policies that we will send out at a later time. These safety policies will be based on both UW and our insurer’s recommendations.
We will also work with the chapter to put a live out application process in place for women with signed contracts now wishing to live out due to the circumstances. This will happen in July or early August. Live outs will still be expected to pay live out fees, regardless of their ability to visit the chapter house. This is necessary for sustaining the chapter facility and staff wages in this very tight economic time. We hope to offer some remote activities for all members to keep connected with the house, such as tea time with Luise on zoom.
I will be in touch when I have more information. September seems extremely far away and very soon, all at the same time. Please let me know if you have questions and I’ll try to answer them to the best of my ability.
Have a nice day,
Maggie Morris
