Congratulations to Carilyn Brandt for receiving the University of Washington President’s Medalist Award! 🏆 Carilyn, majoring in English and minoring in environmental studies, is an officer for The UW Farm's student club, Dirty Dozen — her second home on campus.

Carilyn hopes to explore the connections between the written arts and environmental science. Her ultimate dream is to work in environmental literature — and maybe have her own farm. 🥕 🌽 🍅 📒 ✏️

The Program on the Environment (PoE) is launching the search for our next director, and is seeking input from the program’s campus-wide community in the process. We are hoping that you can support our search by providing feedback in one of two ways: attend a virtual open house, and/or complete this short survey.

- Monday, February 12, 4:30 – 5:20 pm
- Wednesday, February 14, 9:00 – 9:50 am

These meetings will provide our search committee with vital feedback on our community’s expectations for the role, define the key characteristics and experience of an exceptional director, and identify potential candidates. We welcome feedback from a wide group of constituents: our faculty colleagues, current PoE students and alumni, College of the Environment staff, and members of the public. Drop-ins are welcome (no RSVP needed), and attendance for the full hour is not required.

The Living Breath (LB) of wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Committee is seeking three (3) graduate or undergraduate applicants for a UW Student Study Abroad Program to Aotearoa, New Zealand (NZ). This program is offered through the UW Department of American Indian Studies and the UW Student Study Abroad Student Tour Program. Students will receive one (1) academic credit.

The LB Committee supports the advancement of studies in Indigenous food sovereignty and security and the purpose of this trip is to connect UW students who are studying, researching, or have an interest in Indigenous food sovereignty with Māori food sovereignty projects and initiatives. Selected students will visit Māori communities in Whakatane and Whanganui who are enacting food sovereignty as a way to nurture health and wellbeing and strengthen food security.

This Study Abroad Program will take place during the 2024 Spring Break with a tentative date range of March 14 - 24, 2024. We are planning to travel to NZ March 14 or 15 and arrive back in Seattle on March 24.

The Study Abroad Program covers student’s airfare, meals, accommodation, transportation, medical insurance and UW Tours administrative fees. Students will cover their incidentals. Members of our Living Breath Team will be traveling with the students.

NOAA Student Internship Opportunity! Deadline to Apply SOON!
The William M. Lapenta NOAA Student Internship Program

In recognition of the many contributions of Dr. William (Bill) Lapenta to advance NOAA science and services and his dedication to training the next generation of scientists, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) established the William M. Lapenta Student Internship Program in 2019. The program builds on the highly successful National Weather Service (NWS) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Internship which Bill created in 2017 and has since expanded to all NOAA Line Offices.

NOAA is offering paid summer internships targeted towards current 2nd and 3rd-year undergraduate and enrolled graduate students to work in areas that will provide robust research and/or operational experience that will prepare the student for further study in NOAA fields, for application to fellowships or for the NOAA-mission workforce. This internship program enables National Weather Service, (NWS), Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Ocean Service (NOS) and Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) to target the skills needed to fulfill their specific mission needs. Projects may be focused on research areas or development of operational products such as decision support tools, climate and weather forecast models, population dynamics of fish populations, ecosystem modeling, hydrology, ocean circulation models, unmanned systems, data analysis methodologies, social science, and strategies to communicate information pertaining to NOAA’s mission to the public and to stakeholders.

Eligibility
Please review the program website prior to applying.

Must be enrolled in an undergraduate (sophomore and junior status) or graduate degree program, and be a U.S. Citizen willing to undergo a security background check.

Students from all STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors and social science are welcome to apply. Other majors will be considered provided that the student’s experience is relevant to NOAA’s mission.
