Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller combined practical techniques with digital effects for the recent box office hit, Project Hail Mary. The film notably strays away from green screen usage and instead relies on physical sets, to create the interior and exterior of the ship, and puppeteers to bring Rocky (the films lovable extra-terrestrial character) to life.

By making the creative decision to highlight practical effects in a major Sci-Fi blockbuster, the filmmakers represent an increasingly rare portion of Hollywood cinema as special effects and CGI use continue to dominate the field. Could this hold larger implications in the growing age of AI and its impact on artist employment?

Though he directed 2 narrative films, he created over 40 documentary films, including High School (1968), Titicut Follies (1967), Welfare (1975), and Near Death (1989).
