Meet Melinda Whalen, recently awarded Mary Gates Research scholar.

Alongside mentor and UW professor Dr. Glennys Young, Whalen is researching the evolution of the Soviet cultural scene during and post-WWII.

According to Whalen, “This project uses non-traditional media--poetry, films, and fiction--to examine the development of Russian culture and identity following WWII via the representation of topics such as Russian nationalism, the relationship between honor and death, public opinions on self-preservation vs. the greater good, faith in leadership, and criticisms of communism.”

Congratulations, Daniel Chen, University of Washington’s newest Goldwater Scholar!

Goldwater Scholarships recognize the past accomplishments and future promise of students who plan on research careers in STEM.

Chen is also a Mary Gates Research scholar and is a junior double-majoring in informatics and microbiology and already has significant research experience, including better understanding of infectious diseases like COVID-19.

The UW Scholarship for Unpaid Internships has extended its deadline to Sunday, December 20 at 11:59 PM.

This is a $2,500 scholarship is for undergraduate students interested in doing an internship with a non-profit or government organization next summer.
