African Studies Program / JSIS / University of Washington The African Studies Program (ASP) at UW is an interdisciplinary program, fostering a better understa We offer a minor for undergraduate students.

Bringing together faculty from every UW location (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell), students are invited to take classes from a variety of disciplines. We are very flexible in accepting credits towards the minor, encouraging students to engage in internships and study abroad programs th

We also foster an academic community for graduate students through our African Studies Colloquium, led by Mary Kay Gugerty, Professor of Public Affairs, which takes place 2-3 times per quarter. How do contemporary Ethiopian Jewish artists in Israel navigate the web of challenges they face and how are their identities and their work shaped by them? Join us next Thursday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. to hear Efrat Yerday tackle these questions.

We are eager to welcome Yerday, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at Tel Aviv University and chairwoman of the Association for Ethiopian Jews, as well as an accomplished artist and poet herself. Yerday is also a BAMAH visiting artist.
