Hackney Publications has recognized Seattle U Law among its Top 30 U.S. Sports Law Programs of 2026. The article notes the program's focus on the intersection of sports, law, and ethics, as well as the many experiential learning opportunities for students with the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Kraken, and Seattle Seahawks.

"The program allows J.D. students to focus their studies on sports, and non-J.D. students may pursue a Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree in Sports Law and Sports Law Compliance, providing them with a pathway to address the complexities inherent in countless areas of the industry, including NIL, labor law, and intellectual property disputes," the article states.

Baccalaureate Mass was a beautiful celebration to honor the Class of 2026. Dean Tony Varona and retired Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu (photo 4), who delivered the keynote address at May Commencement the next day, led the procession of graduates from Sullivan Hall to the Chapel of St. Ignatius on campus, where Fr. Stephen Sundborg, S.J. (photo 1, second to right), Seattle University's interim president, and Fr. Lucas Sharma, S.J. (photo 1, far right), Jesuit advisor to the dean, said Mass. In his homily, Fr. Lucas used the Parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate the compassion with which good lawyers should always lead. After Mass, everyone celebrated the grads at a reception at Sullivan Hall. Thank you to the law school students and staff who volunteered as lectors, greeters, gift-bearers, and Eucharistic ministers, including Mary Jane Brogan, Geneveve Chavularaja '26, Matt Etter, Ricardo Franco '26, Erin Fullner, Nicole Jennings, and Connor Vaughan '28.

Dana Gold '95, senior director of Advocacy & Strategy at the Government Accountability Project, was recently named Seattle U Law's Woman of the Year. An advocate for whistleblowers for the last 30 years, Gold is currently representing a former Department of Justice attorney who was fired for refusing to lie to a federal judge about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador last year, having evidence of gang membership.

“The issue of immigration lines up with democracy, because this administration is using immigration as one of its primary vehicles to undermine the rule of law,” Gold said. "Silence will do nothing, and this is something we can do."

For the Class of 2026, the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States of America remained a theme throughout the May Commencement ceremony.

“As we celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, I wonder if there has been any period of our country when the profession of law has been more important than now for the protecting of our freedoms, the balancing of the powers within our republic, the assuring of equality for all people, and the guarding of the vulnerable,” said Seattle University Interim President Fr. Stephen Sundborg, S.J.

Retired Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, a Seattle U Law Distinguished Jurist in Residence, said in the keynote address, "We are celebrating a moment in time when our founders made a deep commitment to individual freedom and personal responsibility ... As lawyers, we are the guardians of that great American dream under the rule of law."
