The seventh most widely spoken language in the world, fluency in Portuguese opens multiple professional opportunities in a variety of industries, including business, biotechnologies, medicine, international relations, development, education, energy, environment, tourism, and NGOs. In addition to Brazil's emerging economical status and being the host country for events such as the 2014 FIFA World C

up and the 2016 Summer Olympics, there are seven additional countries where Portuguese is the official language: Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tome and Príncipe. It is also spoken in the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Azores. Our students have the opportunity to learn the language and culture of Lusophone countries, while providing practice in speaking, reading, and writing in a variety of current topics, while innovative and dynamic ways of engaging students are being developed. The most recent experience is real-time classroom interaction with Brazilian university students through the Teletandem Program.
