Polar Science Center-UW

Polar Science Center-UW PSC is a department within the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington. Federal agencies such as NSF, NASA, NOAA and ONR.

Founded November 18,1976, the Polar Science Center conducts research on the oceanography, climatology, meteorology, biology, and ecology of ice-covered regions. The Polar Science Center conducts basic and applied research on the oceanography, climatology, meteorology, biology and ecology of the ice-covered regions on Earth and elsewhere in our solar system . The scope of PSC research and fieldwork

includes the Arctic and the Antarctic, as well as sea-ice, glaciers and continental ice sheets. The PSC staff comprises 20 Principal Investigators, 7 support staff and a varying number of post-doctoral research associates, graduate research assistants, and undergraduate student helpers. Most of the funding for PSC’s research comes from grants and contracts with U.S. A large fraction of PSC research addresses the relationships between the polar regions and the global climate system. Specifically, our research includes observing and modeling the physical processes that control the nature and distribution of sea-ice, the structure and circulation of high latitude oceans and atmosphere, and the interactions among air, ocean, ice and biota. The Polar Science Center is a department within the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington.

PSC's Dr. Karen Junge is a part of the Astrobiology team on the ICEX2024 project funded through the NASA Exobiology program. The team joins with the Navy as it conducts its biennial Ice Exercise (ICEX2024 – Operation ICE WHALE) this March on sea ice off the coast of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
This is a shot from their first night on the ice - one tent, hundreds of miles from any land, floating out in the middle of the ocean on a floating piece of ice.

Our first night on the ice….. one tent, hundreds of miles from any land, floating out in the middle of the ocean on a floating piece of ice. Doesn’t get any cooler than this.

PSC's Kristin Laidre is featured for her work on climate-sensitive Arctic mammals in this poignant article in The New York Times Magazine.

Some are stubborn optimists. Others struggle with despair. Their faces show the weight they carry as they witness the impact of climate change.

UW News asked PSC's Dr. Eric Regehr a few questions about his research studying a population of polar bears that traverse the waters between Alaska and Russia.

Polar scientist Eric Regehr studies polar bears on Wrangel Island, an island off Russia that is home to the highest concentration of polar bears in the world. Regehr and UW glaciologist Ian Joughin...

Join Pacific Science Center for the premiere showing of Arctic: Our Frozen Planet at our Science and a Movie event featuring PSC’s Eric Regehr!

The Pacific Science Center will be showing Arctic: Our Frozen Planet, an IMAX nature documentary by the BBC which PSC’s very own Eric Regehr helped film, and also appears in! Dr. Regehr will be doing a Q&A about polar bears after the showing on May 27. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, Arctic: Our Frozen Planet is an epic adventure across the magical realm of snow and ice at the top of our planet. For millennia, its steady seasons have allowed life to thrive. But global warming is upsetting this balance, and scientists are discovering that what happens here, affects us all.

Dr. Regehr also worked with the BBC on a series entitled Frozen Planet 2, which has been released on BBC channels. This six-part series – narrated by Sir David Attenborough – explores the wildlife found in the world’s coldest regions: the Arctic and Antarctic, high mountains, frozen deserts, snowbound forests, and ice-cold oceans. From polar bears to penguins, and from snow monkeys to Siberian tigers, each species must overcome a unique set of challenges to endure its extreme environment.

Join Pacific Science Center for a special Science and a Movie, Arctic: Our Frozen Planet, followed by a Q&A with a research scientist.
