Rethinking the City: Designing the Modern Metropolis in the Age of Climate Change

Daniel Church, C'11, gives a lecture on the importance of rethinking the way we design cities as climate change begins to reshape our modern world.

In 2009, for the first time in the world's history, more people lived in urban areas than rural areas. Presently, 80% of Americans live in cities, and the number continues to increase. In cities, the main generators of greenhouse gas emissions are buildings and transportation systems. As climate change and subsequent sea level rise become an increasing threat, it is critical that cities find ways to reduce GHG emissions through more efficient urban design. The creation of trans-oriented development and walkable neighborhoods, in conjunction with the reduction automobile dependence and suburban sprawl, is mandatory for our society to achieve a sustainable future. Church will discuss the importance of urban design in shaping a more sustainable urban future, giving examples of ideal scenarios being developed around the nation and the world.

Josh Slotnick (University of Montana) will be on campus April 16 and 17 to give a talk on sustainable agriculture and the student farm movement, and to share his poetry.

Slotnick is a lecturer in environmental studies at the University of Montana and co-founder of the nonprofit Garden City Harvest in Missoula, Mont., and the PEAS Farm. He manages the PEAS farm, a 10-acre farm two miles from the university, which combines academics with hands-on work and produces thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables each season for low-income Missoulians.

On Thursday, April 17, Slotnick will give a talk at 4:30 p.m. on the Spencer Hall lawn. Some seating will be provided; bring a blanket or chair if possible. The rain location will be the Mary Sue Cushman Room. Light refreshments will be offered.

In addition to teaching and farming, Slotnick has recently published a book of poetry, HomeFarm. The book’s editor says, “HomeFarm is a documentary, a daily almanac of a real-world place that reflects the truth of where poetry comes from.” Slotnick will read some of his works at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the GreenHouse (on Alabama Avenue).

Slotnick’s visit is sponsored by the University Farm, Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, Farm Club and the GreenHouse.
