Get your heart pumping this spooky season! Beginning October 1st, join FitWell’s “Carving Out Your Cardio” Challenge.

The goal is for you to log 600 minutes of cardio during the month of October (about 20 minutes a day) for a chance at a Sewanee Wellness running belt. Plus, the person with the most minutes logged by October 29th wins a private Halloween-themed spin class on Friday, October 31st!

Why cardio? The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio per week to keep your heart strong, lower health risks, and boost overall energy. Whether it’s running, biking, swimming, or dancing like a zombie at midnight, cardio is a fantastic way to keep your body and mind thriving.

Great apps to log cardio are Strava, Nike Run Club, MapMyRun, but you can also just use the notes app in your phone! Whatever the app, whatever the cardio, this is a great chance to prioritize your heart health.

Thank you for coming together this Su***de Prevention Month to learn, share, and spread hope. Let’s continue to break the silence and look out for one another.

Here are some important resources to remember:
🌻CAPS is free for all current students. You can schedule an appointment on your patient portal, by calling (931) 598-1325 or stopping by in person.
🌻CAPS has a 24-Hour Crisis Line that is available to current students (even on breaks!) and the number is (931) 598-1700.
🌻If your student group or department would like to learn about su***de prevention, email [email protected] to schedule our “You Are Not Alone” training.

There is always hope. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and help is here. 💛🌻

To wrap up Su***de Prevention Month, we want to highlight some of the resources we have here at Sewanee for students.

Every weekday during business hours (8am-4:30pm, lunch 12-1pm), we have Same-Day appointments for those who feel they cannot wait until their next therapy appointment or are in more acute need. Sewanee students can call CAPS at (931) 598-1325 or come by in person to schedule a Same-Day appointment.

We also have a 24-Hour Crisis Line at (931) 598-1700.

Know that 🌻

Did you know that CAPS offers MindBody Lab (MBL) for Athletes, a program designed specifically for athletic teams? Through mindfulness, visualizations, and biofeedback monitoring, athletes can learn emotion regulation, improve focus, and reduce stress.

Sewanee is also home to a chapter of Morgan’s Message, a national organization dedicated to equalizing mental and physical health for student athletes and reducing the stigma around seeking help. Our chapter president, Grace Black, is a strong advocate for athlete mental health. She even launched a business selling crewnecks for Su***de Prevention Month with the powerful reminder: “I’m Happy You’re Here.”

To all Sewanee student-athletes: remember that .

Did you know that CAPS offers more than just individual talk therapy? Along with groups, CAPS has two other free offerings for students:

MindBody Lab
The MindBody Lab (MBL) is a resource for students that combines mindfulness with biofeedback monitoring to help better manage strong emotions and increase personal resilience.

Anxiety and stress
Depression
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Difficulty with life transitions
ADHD

Call the CAPS Front Desk at (931) 598-1325, come by in person, or talk to your current therapist about these offerings!
