Shepherd University Common Reading Program

Shepherd University Common Reading Program A new book is chosen each year for all to read and explore. Read the Book & Join the Conversation! (2002). First-Year Experience Newsletter (FYE), 143, 8-9.

Shepherd University's Common Reading Program was first formed in 2008 and celebrates its 16th anniversary in 2022-2023. The program is made possible through the support of the Shepherd University Foundation and private, individual donors. Common Readings have been prevalent at liberal arts colleges and universities for decades. Common Reading programs are designed โ€œto provide a common academic exp

erience for all students (especially first-year) and to strengthen the academic atmosphere of the institution from the first day the student arrives on campus.โ€ There are other benefits, such as connecting students to their peers and instructors and creating a unifying force in which all incoming students share from the very start of their educational journey. For more information, please contact the program director at [email protected].

A vital and urgent call to action about the precarious state of American democracy, charting its historical challenges and current threats, from one of our era's most important and insightful historians. At a time when the very foundations of democracy seem under threat, the lessons of the past offer a roadmap for navigating a moment of political crisis. Richardson delves into the tumultuous journey of American democracy, examining the historical forces that have led to the current political climate. She reminds us that democracy is not a static institution but a living, evolving process that requires constant vigilance and participation from all of us. This powerful testament to the resilience of democratic ideals shows how we, as a nation, can take the lessons of the past to address today's challenges and secure a more just and equitable future.
