Congratulations to Dr. Hawkins & Grace Coffman on their research. It carries implications for South Central Pennsylvania. With this research, Shippensburg University demonstrates the "public value of public universities."

Dr. Tim Hawkins and student Grace Coffman (Shippensburg University) are partnering with the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the South Mountain Partnership to study warehouse development’s impact on air quality in the Cumberland Valley. This collaboration underscores the role of our universities in addressing critical regional environmental issues through hands-on student research.

Watch out world! We are releasing this crop of geoscience professionals so they can begin the next chapter of their already outstanding careers. They have grown so much over the last few years and have built a solid foundation to support whatever they build on top! We are sad to say good bye, but we are proud of all that we know they will do in their future! Congratulations to each of you! Always remember Shearer Hall (when the lights were on) and come back and see us from time to time! Rock on!

Dr. Hawkins and researchers link warehouse development to increased air pollution in Cumberland Valley

Dr. Tim Hawkins, professor of geography and Earth science and student researcher, Grace Coffman, are continuing to lead research (funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the South Mountain Partnership) examining the environmental impact of warehouse development throughout the Cumberland Valley and its effect on air quality.

“We expected PM pollution to be higher in the valley due to the warehouse, highways, truck traffic and mountains that trap the pollution,” Hawkins said. The report conducted by the South Mountain Partnership found roughly 200 warehouses in the valley, a number that has risen since the first facility opened in 1988, and noted increased truck traffic on Interstate 81 and I-76 over the past 25 years.

Drs. Feeney & Wildermuth lead study abroad journey across Europe

Over Spring break, Dr. Alison Feeney, Chair of the Department of Geography & Earth Science, and Dr. David Wildermuth, Professor of the Department of Global Languages & Culture, led a study abroad trip through Germany, Austria and Czechia. Students crossed borders from Munich to Salzburg, České Budějovice, Plzeň, Bamberg and several other cities, where they fully immersed themselves in geographic research and the culture of each region. “Teaching GERM 190 and GEO 490 shaped the trip by making it much more than a travel experience, but rather a deliberate academic field course,” said Feeney.
