Five members of LSUS's Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society chapter presented original research at the 2026 Annual Regional Meeting of Louisiana Chapters at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Congratulations to Samuel Chandler, who earned an honorable mention in the Best Undergraduate Paper competition for his research, "The Greek Orthodox Church Under N**i Occupation."

Computer science student Augustine Nwafor earned the Best Poster Presentation Award at the 100th annual Louisiana Academy of Sciences meeting for “SmartKnee,” a wearable system designed to monitor knee movement in real time and help prevent ACL injuries before they happen.

Using AI-powered feedback and live biomechanical tracking, SmartKnee gives athletes and coaches immediate alerts when dangerous movement patterns are detected.

LSU Shreveport is hosting a community conversation focused on understanding the difference between mental illness and patterns of abuse and control.

The free conference, “Choice vs. Condition: Why Abuse is Not a Mental Illness,” takes place Saturday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LSUS Ballroom and brings together mental health professionals, advocates, law enforcement, and community organizations in response to the rise in domestic violence incidents locally.

Led by LSUS psychology instructor and licensed professional counselor Kesha Simmons, the event aims to provide practical tools, clinical insight, and meaningful dialogue around prevention, accountability, and community support.

The conference is open to mental health professionals, students, first responders, caregivers, nonprofit staff, and community members. Continuing education credits are available for attendees.
