From the precision of modern lab to the haunting history of 1873 🔬📜

Our Medical Laboratory Science students took a step back in time to honor the lives lost in Shreveport to one of the deadliest yellow fever epidemics in U.S. history. We visited the Yellow Fever Sesquicentennial Memorial at Oakland Cemetery, which was dedicated in October 2023.

The memorial honors nearly 800 victims buried in this mass grave. Seeing the bronze plaques inscribed with their names and the eternal flame to signify remembrance was a truly humbling experience. It was a sobering reminder of the vital role diagnostic science and public health play in protecting our communities.

We followed the trail of history to the Spring Street Museum, where we explored a treasure trove of 19th-century Shreveport history. From intricate maps and early currency to the foundations of our first churches and schools, the exhibits painted a vivid picture of life in the 1800s. We also spent time viewing a dedicated Yellow Fever display, which provided even more context to the medical challenges of the past and the advancements we often take for granted today.

A special thank you to Dr. Cheryl White, Professor of History at LSUS, and Mr. Dominick Mercer, Coordinator of Museum Services at LSUS. Their incredible knowledge of the Yellow Fever epidemic and Shreveport’s local history made this experience unforgettable. Thank you for sharing your expertise and helping us connect our future careers as medical laboratory professionsals to lessons of the past!
