“There was a man sent from God whose name was John” (John 1:6).
In this verse from the prologue of the Gospel of John (the Evangelist) places John the Baptist squarely within the great mystery of the Incarnation. But why is he one of the great figures of Advent? Because “[h]e came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.” John the Baptist announced the arrival of Christ.
You might say that John, Jesus’ cousin, was born for this mission. At the Visitation, when Mary met John’s mother Elizabeth, the unborn John leapt for joy in his mysterious encounter with the Word made flesh, himself also still in the Virgin’s womb. Thirty years later at the Jordan River, John recognized Jesus as the Messiah: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” This declaration, now incorporated into the Mass, indicates the Real Presence of Christ, the incarnate God who gives us himself to consume.
As we enter this third week of Advent, ask yourself: Do I live my life in a way that it announces the coming, or the presence, of Christ? Could the words from the Gospel of John – “there was a man sent by God whose name was…” – be said of me?
