As we struggle each day to be open to God’s liberating grace, we learn more about just how deeply sin affects our lives. We learn in turn how our sins affect others, and how their sins affect us. It is all too easy to fall into a cycle of mutual recrimination. Resentment can turn to hardness of heart, and then to hatred.

Jesus came into the world to free the world from this cycle. He came to soften our hearts and lead us into the unity and fraternity of the Church, which is His Body. The freedom He offers us is a freedom to forgive and be forgiven.

Forgiveness is sometimes viewed as weakness by the world. But it is lack of forgiveness that is true weakness. It makes hearts brittle, or else binds them tightly as if with iron chains. Recall that the strongest of all hearts, the Sacred Heart, is pierced – yet that seeming weakness conquers death itself.

Where in your life might Christ be calling you to ask for or offer forgiveness? Where does he want the power of his mercy to make your heart strong like his?

“There was a man sent from God whose name was John” (John 1:6).

In this verse from the prologue of the Gospel of John (the Evangelist) places John the Baptist squarely within the great mystery of the Incarnation. But why is he one of the great figures of Advent? Because “[h]e came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.” John the Baptist announced the arrival of Christ.

You might say that John, Jesus’ cousin, was born for this mission. At the Visitation, when Mary met John’s mother Elizabeth, the unborn John leapt for joy in his mysterious encounter with the Word made flesh, himself also still in the Virgin’s womb. Thirty years later at the Jordan River, John recognized Jesus as the Messiah: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” This declaration, now incorporated into the Mass, indicates the Real Presence of Christ, the incarnate God who gives us himself to consume.

As we enter this third week of Advent, ask yourself: Do I live my life in a way that it announces the coming, or the presence, of Christ? Could the words from the Gospel of John – “there was a man sent by God whose name was…” – be said of me?

Let us keep Christ in our hearts this Advent. As Pope Francis reminds us, “We are so busy with all the preparations, with gifts and things that pass. But let us ask ourselves what we should do for Jesus and for others!

What shall we do?” - Pope Francis
