In celebration of the last day of Black History Month, our co-sponsor miss Raynisha Robinson wanted to share this article written by Dr. Tony Evans on unity, racial reconciliation and working toward oneness in Christ.

"…tolerance is still a far cry from reconciliation. The mere fact that we remain relationally separated most of the time, only coming together for an event or cross-cultural seminar, shows how far we need to go."

Dr. Tony Evans on unity, racial reconciliation and working toward oneness in Christ.

The Intercultural Film Festival is THIS WEEKEND, Friday Feb. 24 and Saturday Feb. 25 in Bynum Theater at 7pm!

Two nights, two films, two great discussions. On Friday there will be a showing and discussion of The Good Lie. It follows the story of a group of Sudanese refugees and their experience of coming to the United States. The discussion will be led by honors students.

On Saturday we will be watching Not One Less. This is a Chinese film about a substitute teacher's search for a missing student. The discussion will be led by Dr. Arrington

Snacks will be provided both nights! Be there! Bring tissues! Bring all your preconceived notions and adherence to stereotypes, along with an open heart and get ready for a wild ride.

More history for Black History Month:

If you've ever been to summer camp, maybe you've noticed that there is a distinct lack of minority presence among the campers and camp staff. Many factors contributed to this, like who was/is able to afford camp, travel to camp, and how comfortable/safe they (children and young adults) feel about going for an extended period of time.

One camp that endeavored to provide the summer camp experience to children of african american professionals was Camp Atwater.

Founded in 1921, by Dr. William De Berry, it is the oldest ACA (American Camp Association) accredited African-American owned and operated camp in the United States.

According to Dr. Elwood Watson (professor of history and african american studies at etsu), "Many of [the participating] families were part of the great migration that took place during the early years of the 20th century…Since African Americans throughout the North -- regardless of their economic, educational, or social status -- were excluded from the vast majority of the region's white camps, many of them began to enroll at Camp Atwater."

After time, as white camps began to desegregate and more camps for children of black families opened, Camp Atwater's attendance declined. However, it remains true to it's original purpose–"fostering the emotional and intellectual development of African American youth."

if you know more about the history of camping and overnight camps as it relates to race in the U.S., go ahead and leave a comment!

Serving youth for 97 years, Camp Atwater is a residential summer camp for boys and girls, 8 - 15 years old. Atwater is located in North Brookfield, MA. Our mission is to develop youth physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Camp Atwater is owned and operated by the Urban League of Spri...

Today, we can celebrate the 86th birthday of a very influential woman in african american literature. Toni Morrison is an african american novelist, editor, and Professor Emeritus at Princeton. Her most well known works include The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, and Beloved.

This is an article she wrote concerning chaotic, desperate, political times, in which she says we, 'the so-called civilized'–especially artists–are to work towards better days.

"I know the world is bruised and bleeding, and though it is important not to ignore its pain, it is also critical to refuse to succumb to its malevolence. Like failure, chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge—even wisdom. Like art."

In times of dread, artists must never choose to remain silent.
