For the last eight years, we have been encouraging collaboration across disciplines through integrated coursework.

Once again, this spring, students in the Collaborative Design Lab (CDL) course worked in interdisciplinary teams made up of Engineering, Computer Science, Graphic Design, and Business majors to build startups from idea to pitch.

These teams ideated, developed prototypes, conducted market research, created financial projections, and delivered final pitch presentations together. Along the way, they learned an important lesson that extends beyond the classroom: meaningful innovation rarely happens in isolation.

This course format gives students the opportunity to sharpen their own expertise while learning how to communicate, problem-solve, and create alongside people who think differently than they do and bring different skill sets.

We’re proud of the work students accomplished this semester and are grateful for faculty who encourage and strengthen collaborative, hands-on learning at JBU.

After 40 years in Christian higher education and 28 years at JBU, our beloved Jane Beers is retiring. ❤️

When we sat down with her to reflect on her time here, she kept coming back to one thing: 'life together.'

For decades, she has helped our community grow. Not just as strong academics, but also as thoughtful people, supported and challenged by a community that believes in us.

"You’ve got to be a whole person,” she said. “Head, heart, and hand.”

Former students have said to her, “Thank you for not making it easy. Thank you for telling me I could do this. It was not easy, but I was supported.”

Mrs. Beers described JBU as a place where different people learn from one another and where everybody has a role to play.

She also spoke warmly about the future of the college and the faculty who will continue her work.

“I’ll miss it,” she said, “but I’m ready.”

In honor of her legacy, a small tree now stands in front of Bell Science Hall as a reminder of the countless lives she has impacted through her faithful service, encouragement, and care.

Thank you, Jane Beers. 💛

We believe intercultural conversations are an important part of living in community as God's beloved church!

So each semester, a group of students, faculty, and staff at John Brown University take part in the Intercultural Engagement Colloquium. This semester’s course centered on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while next semester will explore immigration from a Christian perspective.

Together, participants looked at the role Christian faith played in Dr. King’s vision for justice, reconciliation, and human dignity. The semester culminated in a three-day immersion trip to Little Rock and Memphis, where students and staff encountered the history and impact of the Civil Rights Movement in a deeply personal way at the motel where Dr. King was shot, at the school where integration took place, and worshipping with a multiethnic congregation on Sunday morning.

What makes the colloquium especially meaningful is the way it invites our community to learn together. Alongside the course, faculty and staff participated in a semester-long book club reading Jonathan Eig’s 'King: A Life,' with several faculty and staff joining the trip as well.

Led by Drs. Ted Song and Keith Jagger, the Intercultural Engagement Colloquium is open to all students and explores topics at the intersection of faith, culture, and public life.

We’re grateful for spaces like this where students are encouraged to listen well, think deeply, and engage difficult conversations with Christ-centered humility and compassion.

Why JBU? Our students say it best!

"I love the community of JBU. I think a lot of colleges don't have the community and family that we have here. I love how I know everyone and how everyone is nice." –Alitza Espinoza '27, computer science major

What we'll miss the most over the summer is the way students love on each other and bring life to every inch of campus. ☺️
