Dordt's ASCE Student Chapter enjoyed a year-end social hosted at Prof Vander Werff's house. We had a fun time of food and fellowship, reflecting on the Symposium trip and all the activities that have happened throughout the year. And we were also able to recognize our graduating seniors! Thanks to everyone who helped to make this year a success!

Here are some more pictures from the ASCE Symposium! Our canoe held up really well, and our students did a good job paddling along with getting some good ideas for next year. We also enjoyed the presentations and other activities and were able to observe a little of the steel bridge competition. We even got a little hiking in! Our ASCE student chapter is excited to be down in Carbondale, Illinois for the ASCE Mid-America Symposium! We have gotten off to a great start with the Mystery Design Challenge and Concrete Bowling Ball and are looking forward to Concrete Canoe and more today, with the concluding banquet tomorrow. Thanks to the ASCE - Iowa Section and the state-level board members who made the trek up to Dordt's campus to co-host the ASCE Joint Meeting with Dordt's ASCE Student Chapter! And a big thank you to Mitch Dryden from WDS Construction, Inc. and Amanda Goodenow and Jordan Twedt from ISG who shared their expertise and experience on the ongoing renovations in Dordt's Rozenboom Family Athletic Center. It was great to hear about the project and about the collaboration and communication between engineer and contractor that it takes to make a project like this successful.

We’ve had a great start to our Friday Speaker series this semester, including a few in-house talks from Dordt students, faculty, and staff, and also a couple Dordt alumni speakers. Thanks in particular to Mike Vander Wel from Janicki and Jonathan Bentz from NVIDIA for sharing information, perspective, and opportunities related to their industry work. Dordt’s Concrete Canoe team has been having a great time this year! Early in the semester, they had a great time paddling and enjoying an evening bonfire, and since then they’ve been hard at work, designing and testing different mixes and working on conceptual designs. Looking forward to more work and play in the weeks and months ahead, culminating in the Mid-American Conference competition which will be hosted by Southern Illinois-Carbondale next April.

Our ASCE student chapter has been making the most of its Monday evening meetings this year! Between internship presentations, games, design competitions, and lots of event planning, there’s never a dull moment. Looking forward to the weeks and months ahead!
