Larisa King is headed to teach 3rd grade at Morningside Elementary! 🍎✏
Larisa pursed education because she learned about the gaps in our education system and knows that she can be the person to help close those gaps for every student who comes into her classroom.

We asked her what her most impactful moment was at the Sharon Walker School of Education, and she said: "The guidance provided to me by all of my phenomenal professors who helped me become the educator I am today."

A word of advice to future educators from Larisa: "There is still autonomy in teaching! Lesson plans and scripted curriculum do not take the place of your true teaching. You can still be the teacher you want to be while following the directions of your district!"

Congratulations, Larisa! We are so excited to see the impact you make at Morningside Elementary and the Sioux City community! πŸ“šπŸŒŸ

Congratulations to Marco Alvarado, who will be starting his teaching career at Lewis and Clark Middle School in Omaha as a 6th Grade History/Science teacher! He also plans to earn his Masters Degree in Sports Administration! 🍎✏

Marco's Why: To be a symbol that when life does get hard, to not let it beat you down, and hold on to your potential to pursue the best version of yourself.

We asked Marco what his most memorable moments were at the Sharon Walker School of Education, and he said, "Outside of student teaching, definitely just lessons, obstacles, and the laughs along the way from freshman year to now with the same people all 4 years." πŸ“š

His advice to future educators: "Education is not a straight line. Don't focus so much on "Will this guarantee success". Allow yourself to grow, ask questions to develop your own teaching because your skills will change over time. You don't need to have everything figured out from the start. Believe in yourself even when everything goes wrong."

Congratulations, Marco! We are so of you! 🌟

Hannah Nichols is off to teach K-8 Art at McCook Public Schools this fall! She was inspired to become a teacher to help young people grow to build a better future. 🍎✏

Her favorite part about being in the Sharon Walker School of Education was building relationships with all of her professors!πŸŽ“

Advice that Hannah would give to future educators: "Never be afraid to fail because as educators we are the examples for the younger generation, so they know it’s ok to fail as long as you get back up."

Congratulations, Hannah! We can't wait to see the impact you make in your own classroom and community. We are so of you! 🌟

As the capstone to our Master's degree programs, we ask MAT students to conduct action research because we believe strongly that it is at the core of excellence in teaching practice. This academic year we had over 150 action researchers in the School of Education!

The Tevis award is given annually to one student who generates action research that is timely, useful, grounded in the literature, designed with reliability and validity, and yields conclusions from the findings that are consistent with the data collected. While there is only one Tevis Award for Excellence in Action Research recipient announced during commencement, our faculty also want to highlight additional students for special recognition for distinction in action research. Their work also embodies the "Tevis spirit."

Dr. Glenna Tevis served in many roles within the School of Education at Morningside. She was an impactful leader of graduate programs and instrumental in the implementation of action research as part of the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. When she retired, the Tevis Award for Excellence in Action Research was created in her honor. The following video is a showcase of the action research studies completed by students who were acknowledged with a Distinction in Action Research certificate, and the Tevis Award for Excellence in Action Research.

Congratulations to our Distinction in Action Research and Tevis Award Recipients! We are so of you!

Emma's mom inspired her to purse education because of her positive impact that she made on her as an educator herself. Emma's most memorable time at the Sharon Walker School of Education was her practicum placement and student teaching placement that took place with a wide range of grades and diverse students that helped er prepare for her future position!

Emma's advice for future educators, "Always remember why you chose education and remember the students and how much you will impact them in great ways!"

Congratulations, Emma! 🌟

Congratulations to Faith Beeck! She will teaching third grade at Glidden Ralston this fall! 🍎✏

Faith was inspired to become an educator by all of the amazing teachers she had as a student and wanted to make an impact on our future. The most impactful moments she had during her time with The Sharon Walker School of Education were seeing and learning about all of the different aspects of learning and how important it is to ask others for ideas and help!

Faith's best advice for future educators: "If you want to make an impact on others, make sure you are taking care and making an impact on yourself!"

Congratulations, Faith! We are so of you and cannot wait to see the impact you make in your own classroom this fall! 🌟

Congratulations to the 2026 graduates, especially our future educators! We are so proud of you! πŸŽ“
