On Juneteenth, we recognize the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The date was June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, and announced the end of the Civil War and slavery. However, the Emancipation Proclamation came two years earlier on January 1, 1863.

The University will be closed today to recognize the great significance of this occasion.

While Eliana Gregg holds many fond memories of her time at USF, her most transformative experience didn’t take place on campus. Instead, it unfolded over 6,000 miles away in her birthplace of South Korea.

What began as a simple journey back to her roots grew into a deeper calling to serve others, something she hopes to continue fostering in graduate school and her future career.
