On Juneteenth, we recognize the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The date was June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, and announced the end of the Civil War and slavery. However, the Emancipation Proclamation came two years earlier on January 1, 1863.
The University will be closed today to recognize the great significance of this occasion.
