Award Spotlight: Slippery Rock University Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative
On July 9, 2026, the Slippery Rock University Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative received the Outstanding Arts Integration & STEAM Initiative Award.
Presented at Creativity Connected in St. Louis, this national honor recognizes the initiative's collaboration with the SRU/SGA Preschool and Childcare Center, selected from an international pool of applicants.
Under the guidance of Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich, field experience students Quin Coltman, Travis Peters, Ian Fuechslin, Brooke Dougherty, Raven Ordona, and Elizabeth Hixon design music learning experiences that combine artistic expression with core developmental skills.
Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich noted that the partnership serves as a living laboratory, sharing that "music gives us a beautiful way to connect all areas of learning." Student Brooke Dougherty shared, "Being able to bring music to these young children every week taught me how powerful hands-on learning truly is," while Travis Peters added, "The fact that something as simple as that is nationally recognized is so overwhelming," emphasizing that "every child deserves the opportunity to experience music."
This award highlights the dedication of SRU student educators while showcasing how arts integration brings lasting educational value to young learners in the community.
