The Macoskey Center

The Macoskey Center Slippery Rock University's home for hands-on sustainability education & action 🌱 Dr. Robert A. Macoskey was a man of deep insight and uncommon charisma.

He was a Slippery Rock University (SRU) philosophy professor, pastor, father,
husband, mentor, and friend. Moreover, he had an intensely practical way of
putting ideas into action. He had a dream to develop a “project in which
people from all walks of life and all ages could begin to work out the dynamics
of the ‘new’ story.” This new story was that people would be a part of a
community and work t

oward a “healthier and more self-sustaining style of life”
for not only themselves but also for future generations. He challenged SRU
students, faculty, staff and community members to become a part of this
dream. For he believed that each and every one of them were a necessary part
of bringing this dream into fruition. From this dream, he created the ALTER
(Alternative Living Technology & Energy Research) project. The ALTER project
was in need of a place to grow and flourish. Originally, the dream was to
develop a giant $30,000,000 complex that would sit on 300+ acres of land. This complex was to be completely self-sustaining and would house around
150 students, staff, and visiting expert workers and researchers. After a few
years, Dr. Bob Macoskey found it necessary to scale down this vision. He and
his team concluded that it would be more feasible to renovate and retrofit the
Patterson house, which was an old 1920’s farmhouse located on SRU’s property. After several renovations over the course of 25 years, the Harmony House
became LEED-certified silver. Since 1990, this 70-acre homestead has served as
a resource for sustainability education, demonstration, and research for SRU
faculty, staff, students, and community members. Today, The Macoskey Center’s vision is to fulfill SRU’s educational,
sustainability, and strategic mission by integrating campus and community
resources to inspire and create an environmentally, socially, and economically
sustainable and just future. We will achieve our vision through offering a
variety of hands-on, educational programming and outdoor recreational
experiences that aim to transform the capacities of SRU faculty, staff, and
students as well as community members to meet the needs of present and
future generations. Through the management and maintenance of our 70-
acre homestead, we demonstrate sustainable, cost-effective strategies and
enhance physical facilities. We also create mutually beneficial partnerships to
enhance learning, educational programming, and interdisciplinary research. Our site features organically-managed gardens, a community garden,
greenhouses, chickens, hiking trails, aquaponics, indoor/outdoor classroom
spaces, and more. We regularly offer sustainability education workshops,
programming, and tours. There are also opportunities to get involved
through volunteering, student worker positions, graduate assistantships, and
our on-campus farm stand! Please PM us to learn more!

Last week, the Orientation Ambassador Program staff spent time volunteering at the Macoskey Center, helping with several important projects around the property!

Their efforts included tarping our future butterfly waystation and other invasive-covered areas, popping privet, and helping build our mud kitchen for summer camp. These projects help us create healthier habitats and meaningful outdoor experiences for our visitors.

A huge thank you to this amazing group for their hard work and enthusiasm!

Here's what our summer teams have been up to!

🛠️ Our Trails & Habitat Management Team has been busy caring for the property through trail and grounds maintenance, gardening projects, invasive species removal, and improvements to key spaces around the center. They've also been reorganizing the barn, deep cleaning the Spring House, rebuilding our three-bin compost system, preparing the future Monarch Waystation, supporting Project NestWatch, and creating a mud kitchen for Summer Camp.

📚 Our Education Team has been completing onboarding, developing lessons, preparing materials, and getting ready for another exciting season of Summer Camp programming.

📸 Our Media Team has been managing social media, capturing photography, creating graphics, designing new signage for the center, and preparing this month's newsletter. If you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to sign up through our Linktree to stay up to date on programs, events, and center news.

We're grateful for the hard work of our student teams as they care for the property, support educational programming, and help connect our community with the Macoskey Center!

Have any of these items at home? 👀

We’re in need of a few supplies for our Summer Camp programs as we get ready for the season.

We’re looking for:
• Lightweight scarves (silk or similar; any size/color, no heavy winter scarves)
• Fabric (sheets, blankets, clothing, sewing scraps, ribbon, yarn, etc.)
• Clean plastic grocery bags (rips or holes are okay)
• Wooden blocks or similar items for flower pounding activities
• Sticks, wooden dowels, or old pencils (for ribbon twirlers and other activities)
• Dress-up clothes

If you’re able to help, please drop off donations at the Macoskey Center Tuesday–Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Take an up-close look at our living roof on our Spring House at Macoskey Center! 🔍

This green roof is primarily composed of sedum, which are well adapted to shallow, low-nutrient environments. They help regulate temperature by cooling the space below, reduce stormwater runoff by absorbing rainfall, and provide small habitats for insects and other invertebrates.

It’s a simple example of how living systems can support both buildings and biodiversity at the same time!

Meet Our Summer Team! ☀️

This summer, these students are gaining hands-on experience while helping support the Macoskey Center’s trails, gardens, animals, programs, and natural spaces.

We’re excited to have them on board and can’t wait to share what they’re working on throughout the season!

Growing season is underway! 🌱

Our Homestead and Trails Management Team has been hard at work in the Learning Garden, preparing the space for a new growing season.

This year, the team is using square-foot gardening, companion planting and a traditional Three Sisters bed. Square-foot gardening helps organize the garden into smaller sections, while companion planting places certain plants near one another because of how they can support each other’s growth.

The Three Sisters method grows corn, beans and squash together in the same bed. Corn gives the beans something to climb, beans help support the soil and squash spreads across the ground to help shade it.

The garden will grow a variety of produce and herbs, including squash, kale, rosemary, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, cucumbers and tomatoes. Produce from the Learning Garden will be used at our Harmony Harvest fundraiser in September.

The ecotherapy pond construction is complete! 🚧

Our Homestead and Trails team has been hard at work creating a peaceful green space behind the Harmony House, featuring a waterfall, benches and meditation spiral for visitors to enjoy.

Thanks to a grant from The Green Fund, we will also be able to continue improving the space by replacing invasive plants with beneficial native plantings. These updates help support a healthier landscape while creating a welcoming place for relaxation and connection with nature.

Stop by during daylight hours to enjoy the relaxing sounds of the waterfall and spend some time outdoors!

🚨 Free roosters! 🚨

We recently confirmed two roosters amongst our new chicken flock — a White Leghorn and a Rhode Island Red.

While we’ve enjoyed having them, we don’t house males at the Macoskey Center due to the nature of our space and programming. They're free to anyone who can give them a good home!
