Take a look at what our paramedic class accomplished this weekend. We made the most of the great weather and, more importantly, created some solid learning experiences along the way.

Students had the opportunity to get out on the water for a hands-on introduction to boat operations—big thanks to Billy Langston and the Smithfield Firefighter's Association for making that happen. From there, we moved into practical skills with search and rescue techniques, patient extrication, and mass casualty incident training.

We wrapped things up with a little “complex airway rodeo” to keep the energy up and the skills sharp. It was a full weekend of learning, teamwork, and a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy seeing what they’ve been working on!

🚑TacMed & TECC Course Now Open for Registration!

Ready to level up your skills in high-risk, real-world environments? Our Tactical Medicine (TacMed) & Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course is a 4-day, 32-hour intensive designed for public safety professionals.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in:
✔️ Hemorrhage control
✔️ Chest trauma management
✔️ Trauma kit utilization
✔️ Life-threatening injury response

📅 Course Dates:
• July 27–29: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Howell Woods)
• July 30: 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM (JCC Public Safety Building)

📍 Open to Public Safety Personnel

Our partnership continues to grow stronger each year through collaborative training opportunities, hands-on educational experiences, and generous donations of equipment — including multiple ambulances that play a critical role in keeping our EMS programs operational and student-ready.

This is a big step forward for us at Johnston Community College EMS.

We just received our new iSimulate systems, and I couldn’t be more excited about what this means for our students. Being able to integrate the monitor directly with simulation scenarios brings training to a whole new level. Instead of just talking about rhythms, vital signs, and clinical decision-making, our students can now see it, manipulate it, and respond to it in real time—just like they would on an actual call.

As someone who truly believes in scenario-based and hands-on learning, this is huge. The more realistic we can make the environment, the better prepared our students will be when it counts. From cardiac arrests to complex medical and trauma cases, these systems allow us to challenge critical thinking, reinforce teamwork, and build confidence in a safe learning space.

I’m incredibly grateful that Johnston Community College continues to invest in cutting-edge tools for medical education. Our students deserve the best, and this is another step toward making sure they leave here ready to serve their communities at the highest level.

🚑🔥 Big upgrade to EMS education! 🔥🚑

We’re excited to roll out our new Meta Quest 3 VR headsets as part of our EMS training program! Using SimX VR, our students can now train in fully immersive, realistic emergency scenarios that go far beyond the classroom and skills lab.

VR allows our EMS students to practice critical thinking, scene management, patient assessment, and decision-making in high-stress situations without risking patient safety. These scenarios expose students to calls they may not see often but absolutely need to be prepared for, from complex medical emergencies to high-risk trauma events.

This technology helps bridge the gap between textbook learning and real-world response. It builds confidence, reinforces teamwork, and allows students to make mistakes, learn, and grow in a safe, controlled environment.

We’re proud to continue pushing EMS education forward and preparing the next generation of providers with the tools they need to succeed on day one in the field. 🚑🩺
