Today, we take a moment to honor and remember a true pillar of our community, Ray Kenneth Robbins.

Ray dedicated his life to service, protection, and education, leaving behind an incredible legacy that continues to inspire.

Ray had a long and distinguished career keeping our communities safe. His service spanned across Texas, California, and Florida, including roles as a Military Policeman for the U.S. Army, Officer for the El Paso Police Department, Detective and Captain for the Midland Police Department, an honored member of the FBI National Academy, and Chief of Police in Andrews, TX

After a career in uniform, Ray brought his expertise to Western Texas College in Snyder, TX. In 1976, he became the founding professor of the Criminal Justice Program, launching a 25-year career shaping the next generation of Peace Officers. He even authored and co-authored several essential textbooks and manuals for the field!

His dedication to teaching was so profound that in 1986, he was awarded the prestigious Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation title of Piper Professor for outstanding scholarly and academic achievement.

Ray was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Though he passed away in 2010, his impact on WTC and the law enforcement community lives on.

Today, we are looking back and celebrating the life of Justin Lester. A young man of remarkable character, talent, and warmth, Justin left an undeniable mark on everyone he met.

During his time at Western Texas College, Justin was a true campus leader. As a journalism major, he brought campus news to life as a sports writer for the newspaper. Whether he was serving on the Student Council, helping guide campus life on the food committee, or working as a resident assistant, his dedication to the WTC community was unmatched.

Before his college days, Justin was a proud McCamey High School Badger (Class of 1993), where he poured his heart into everything he did, from playing tight end on the football field to running track, playing tennis, and bringing music to life on the trombone in the band. He was an active leader in U.I.L. debate, one-act play, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Justin’s faith and community spirit shone brightly through his active involvement in the First United Methodist Church youth group and Chrysalis retreats. He was a friend to all, a dedicated student, and an inspiration.

Through the Justin Lester Memorial Scholarship, his legacy continues to support future generations of students striving for excellence.

Today, we take a moment to honor and remember the life of James Pilgrim, May 16, 1977 – May 12, 1998, a truly outstanding individual who left a lasting mark on Western Texas College and the Snyder community.

James was a proud graduate of Snyder High School, where his dedication shone brightly as a member of both the Tigers Golf Team and the FFA. His commitment to excellence earned him the prestigious honor of being named an All-American Scholar during his high school years.

At Western Texas College, James continued to excel. He was named the Most Outstanding Student in our Golf/Landscape Technology program, showcasing his passion and talent for his field. Today, we are looking back and celebrating the life and lasting legacy of a true community pillar, Sam Joyce, born May 12, 1915.

As the youngest of seven children, Sam’s journey was defined by hard work, leadership, and a passion for moving Snyder forward. From his early days as a football player and student at Tarleton University to running two Joyce family cotton gins, he was never one to sit still!

In 1937, Sam married the love of his life, Florentz Winston. By 1941, his eyes turned to the skies. He took up flying lessons and served as a final inspector of aircraft at Kelly Field in San Antonio during World War II.

When the war ended, Sam brought his passion for aviation back home to Snyder. He officially earned his pilot's license in 1951 and became a driving force on the Scurry County Airport Board. If you’ve ever used or flown into the Winston Field Facility, you have Sam to thank. He was instrumental in bringing the facility to life and securing scheduled airline service for Snyder in 1953.

Beyond his civic achievements, Sam was a devoted member of the Colonial Hill Baptist Church and a family man. He understood the transformative power of learning and deeply encouraged his two children, John Joyce and Helen Claire Hatter, to pursue higher education.

It’s because of visionary community leaders like Sam Joyce, who believed in the future of Snyder and the power of education, that our community continues to thrive today.

Join us in honoring his memory! Drop a 💙 or share your favorite family memories of the Joyce family in the comments below. Read more at wtcalumni.com.
