Meet Aurelia Vargas, a fourth-year mineral engineering student at NMT. She is fresh off a trip to Washington D.C. where she represented NMT at the Department of Energy (DOE) Roundtable on Critical Minerals Workforce. She had the opportunity to join President Mike Jackson and Dr. Navid Mojtabai, a Mineral Engineering professor, for meetings at the Eisenhower Executive Building and the Department of State.

She even had the chance to speak at an event ahead of the roundtable and meet Secretary of Interior Doug Burgum. In her words: “Truthfully, I haven’t experienced anything like this trip. It was surreal at times to be surrounded by the people I was, and to be in the buildings that we were in. It felt like a very significant place to be.”

She left with real insight into where the industry is headed, from national mineral stockpiling for energy security to conversations with CEOs from companies like Peabody and Freeport about how they’re investing in mining education.

Her advice for the next generation of Techies chasing opportunities like this one is: “Pursue every branch of your interests to the fullest extent you can.”

But hear about her experience for yourself as she talks about the high points of her experience.

New Mexico Tech has been awarded $3.3M from the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s Grid Modernization Program to build a smart microgrid demonstration and training platform.

Led by Dr. Qingsong Cui in the Department of Electrical Engineering, the project brings together advanced sensing, AI, and power systems in order to strengthen grid resilience. It is supported by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and two New Mexico Tech research centers: the Petroleum Recovery Research Center (PRRC) and the Institute for Complex Additive Systems Analysis (ICASA). It will be based at the Playas Research and Training Center.

Students, professionals, and partners will be able to get hands-on experience with modern grid technology.
