The Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) is dedicated to promoting gentle, more effective alternatives to violence and force through educational courses ranging from beginner to advanced levels of horsemanship. The Monty Roberts International Learning Center is unique from other training facilities because the primary focus of our training curriculum is on equine psychology and beha

vior rather than riding skills. Students develop a solid understanding of what motivates and influences equine behavior in order to increase their effectiveness in the application of their choice, virtually any discipline of riding, veterinary assisting, farriery, racehorse training and more. In addition, our Monty Roberts' Mustang & Transition Horse Program (MRTHP) re-trains and re-homes horses in transition (to new careers), in partnership with adoption partners from the ASPCA's Right Horse Initiative.

Horses feel more than we often realize—and they remember who listens.

At the heart of true horsemanship is emotional connection. Not just training steps or riding technique, but the ability to see, hear, and understand the horse on a deeper level. Horses are highly sensitive, deeply intuitive, and incredibly honest. When we meet them with patience and presence, they open up in extraordinary ways.

Denise Heinlein, our Head Instructor, embodies this truth every day. With years of global experience and a heart tuned to the horse’s emotional language, Denise leads with compassion, clarity, and respect. Her teaching goes beyond mechanics—it’s about relationship, and building trust that lasts.

Whether you’re here at our headquarters in Solvang, California, learning from our instructors abroad, or at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center Europe (founded and directed by Denise), you’ll find instructors who are dedicated to helping you build a deeper connection with horses—rooted in trust, communication, and care.

Come experience what it means to feel seen—through the eyes of a horse.
