Last week, we had the privilege of hosting students from Adams and Washington High Schools. They participated in a Healthcare Exploration Program and spent time in the MLS student laboratory, performing and interpreting test results to determine the cause of illness for their patient. This was a great experience for all of us... we hope to see some as future Medical Laboratory Scientists!

Doctors and nurses are often the most recognized healthcare workers, but the medical field includes a wide range of other roles that may often be overlooked. An

day 5: Sadly Lab Week is coming to an end, but it does not mean an end to celebrating not only what Medical Laboratory Scientists do every day, but what all healthcare professionals do. I am a firm believer that the care of a patient does not ride solely on the back of one individual or one group of individuals. It is paramount that all healthcare providers, from physicians and nurses to respiratory, radiography, rehabilitation, and lab, come together and recognize that each profession has a unique set of skills and knowledge that aid in the care of every patient. If we all knew the same thing, we would all have degrees in "medicine", "healthcare", or "patient care". When the day comes that interprofessional cooperation becomes routine, that is the day we will see more patients diagnosed and treated with success.
I am grateful that I teach at where we have an interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences full of faculty who are eager to collaborate on projects and seek others as guest speakers so students can see healthcare from multiple disciplines. Medical Laboratory Science students learn with and from Dental Hygiene students every year, and it is an amazing experience.
If you want to know more about the Medical Laboratory Science program, or any of the healthcare programs at IUSB, visit our website. There is, and always will be, a need for professionals who can diagnose, treat, rehab, and monitor patients.

day 4: What does it take to be a laboratory professional, and yes, I do mean professional? We are not just the girls in the lab or the vampires that love to take your blood. We are all educated. There are many different levels from associate's degrees in medical laboratory technology to bachelor's degrees in medical laboratory sciences to master's degrees and, yes, even doctorates do exist... the DCLS. Just like the nurses and doctors who take care of you and even the plumber who fixes your toilet, we are nationally registered and credentialed. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is our credentialing body. They make sure you know what your are doing before you go into the field and for everyone that graduates now, they must maintain continuing education every three years to keep their certification.
It is sad to say that this is a field where many people are retiring and not many people are entering. There is a shortage of laboratory professionals throughout the country and unfortunately it will probably get worse as the years go on before it gets better. So if you, or someone you know, have any interest in healthcare or are simply a science nerd, please consider the laboratory profession as your career of choice. Check out ascp.org and ascls.org for more information. It is well worth the time to have such an impact on the health of people around you.

day 3: So while microbiology is my nerdy job of choice🧫, with blood bank falling as a close second🌡, there are many different departments in the laboratory manned by knowledgeable and experienced laboratory professionals.
Usually referred to as the general lab, the chemistry, hematology, coagulation and urinalysis departments are the core of any medical diagnostic laboratory. The chemistry lab generally performs any and all types of analyte testing ranging from glucose and cholesterol to thyroid hormones and any other kind of function test you can think of. Hematology looks at your blood and all of the individual cells that it is made of to see if you have enough red cells or are anemic, if you have enough white cells or have leukemia, and when you have too many white cells and which kinds they are to know if it's bacterial, viral, parasitic, or simply an allergy. The coagulation department monitors your clotting ability, and if you are on something like warfarin your clotting factors will continue to function as required. And urinalysis goes without saying, they analyze your urine for you. They can determine from your urine if the kidneys are working well.
These people work 24/7 running all STATS from the ER, making sure all of the daily orders from the floor are collected and tested, ensuring pre- and post-operation labs are reported timely, and even letting physicians know when their patient's kidneys are about to fail. The core laboratory is really just that, the core of all testing for our patients.
