Class of 2026: Ashley Heon, B.S. in Dental Hygiene, turned her passion for patient care into a purpose-driven career path. After serving as a dental technician in the United States Air Force, she came to IUSB to pursue dental hygiene, all while raising two children and maintaining a 3.9 GPA.

“I chose IU South Bend because of its strong reputation as one of the top dental hygiene programs, and it has been the perfect place to build my skills and confidence.”

During her time at IUSB, Ashley received the Dental Hygiene Pearl Award, served as Secretary of Hoosier Hygienists, and participated in program events including Give Kids a Smile and Bright Smiles, Bright Minds.

After graduation, Ashley plans to begin her career as a dental hygienist and continue making a difference in her community. Her long-term goal is to return to IU South Bend as a clinical instructor to support and mentor future dental hygiene students.

“The best part of my experience at IUSB was the guidance and unwavering support I received from faculty and peers. I will also miss the meaningful connections I have built with professors and classmates throughout this journey.”

Class of 2026: After beginning her journey at IUSB in 1991, Rhonda Lynn Marietta has come full circle, returning and earning her degree 35 years later.

“In 2024, after my son graduated from high school, I decided it was time to return and complete my degree,” Rhonda shared. “I am incredibly proud to be finishing what I started—accomplishing this goal after 35 years means more to me than words can express.”

Rhonda earned her Bachelor of General Studies while working full time for School City of Mishawaka and continuing her commitment to supporting children. During her final two years at IUSB, she achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA each semester.

She began her studies in 1991 as a business major, later transitioning from a career in banking into special education as a paraprofessional while continuing her work with students.

Returning to school alongside her son was especially meaningful. “Sharing that journey and working toward our goals at the same time made it a truly unique and special experience.”

Next, Rhonda is considering returning to IU to pursue a master’s degree in psychology or social work to further support youth with different needs and abilities.
