🥒 We’re kind of a big dill around here.

After a little summer hiatus from your feed, we’re back and apparently, we’re starting the year in a bit of a pickle. 😄

Our Chancellor Brian Pappas kicked off the new academic year with a reminder that IU South Bend is a BIG DILL, and we’re ready to relish everything the year ahead has in store.

Classes start Monday, and we can’t wait to welcome our students back to campus. Here’s to new classes, new connections, new opportunities, and a great year ahead!

🎉 Congratulations on Finishing Summer Session I! 🎉

Today marks the last day of most Summer Session I courses! Whether you completed a challenging science course, checked off a prerequisite, or made progress toward your degree, take a moment to celebrate your accomplishment. 👏

As you prepare for Summer Session II, here are a few tips to set yourself up for success:

✅ Reflect on what worked well during SS I and what you want to improve.
✅ Check Canvas and your syllabus before classes begin.
✅ Organize your schedule and plan dedicated study time each week.
✅ Gather any required textbooks, software, or supplies early.
✅ Don’t be afraid to reach out to your instructors or academic advisors if you have questions.

Summer courses move quickly, but with a plan and consistent effort, you can make the most of the next session.

This week, we’re featuring Dr. Baaba Essel!

🎬 Hobbies: “I enjoy watching movies and reading.”

❤️ Why I entered healthcare: “I entered healthcare because of my passion for the field. I saw a need in my community, where maternal and infant mortality rates were higher than they should be, and I was motivated to learn more about the causes of these deaths and what I could do to contribute to improving the quality of life for this population.”

📚 Favorite class to teach: “Community Assessment and Program Planning. I enjoy helping students learn how to assess community needs and develop programs that can make a meaningful impact.”

🏕️ Favorite summer activities: “I love going camping, hiking, and playing outdoor games.”

☀️ One thing students should know: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so take a break this summer and have some fun!”

🎓 Alumni Throwback Spotlight

This week, we’re celebrating a special milestone in our program’s history!

In 2019, Belle Tice became the first graduate of our BS in Health Sciences Speech-Language Pathology Concentration, helping launch a tradition of excellence that continues today. As a member of our inaugural graduating cohort, she helped pave the way for future students pursuing careers in communication sciences and disorders (SLP).

Following her undergraduate studies, Belle continued her journey by attending our graduate Speech-Language Pathology program (MS-SLP) further demonstrating her commitment to the profession and the individuals she will serve.

We are proud to recognize Belle and the important role she played in the growth of our program. Thank you for being part of our history and inspiring the next generation of speech-language pathologists!

💙 Friday Faculty Feature 💙

Meet Dr. Jennifer Hatfield!

Hobbies:

When I’m not teaching or working, I enjoy reading, antiquing and exploring estate sales, trying to get back into golf (I’ve golfed since I was 7), cooking and baking, and spending time with my best friend, Maizy 🐾.

Why Healthcare?

I originally planned to become a high school biology teacher and began my undergraduate studies at Valparaiso University with that goal in mind. However, something didn’t quite feel right. At my sister’s suggestion, I observed a speech-language pathology session at the Valparaiso University Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic. From the minute the session started, I could see myself being a speech-language pathologist and immediately changed my major. It was the perfect blend of science and heart! 💜 ❤️

Today, I continue to love the profession and still practice clinically through my private practice several times each month.

Summer Activities:
☀️ Adding plants and interesting architecture to my rock garden
⛳ Golfing
🏺 Hunting for treasures at estate sales
📚 Reading

Favorite class to teach: I love to teach H101: Intro to Health Sciences because it’s exciting to see students realize that there are many more careers to explore/consider in healthcare. I also love teaching P323: Articulation and Phonological Disorders because students begin to think like clinicians!

What Students Should Know:
Every summer, I rewatch Gilmore Girls. It helps me transition from the stress of the academic year to the slower days of summer. I ❤️ licorice (especially black).
