Happy Pohela Boishakh! Today, we celebrate the Bengali New Year and the arrival of spring. Pohela Boishakh is a time for new beginnings, cultural heritage, and unity. The festival of Baisakhi marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year. It is a spring harvest festival that is majorly celebrated in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana. Also known as Vaisakhi, the occasion also commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Baisakhi is among the three Hindu festivals that were chosen by the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das, to be celebrated by Sikhs. It is one of the most important festivals for Sikhs and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The celebration of Baisakhi involves folk dances, songs, and devotion. In villages, men perform bhangra while women perform gidda. Sikhs take a bath early in the day and wear new clothes before visiting gurudwaras and offering prayers. Special ardaas and kirtan is held at gurudwaras after which kada prasad is distributed. People also sit in rows to have langar served by volunteers.

Puthandu, also known as Tamil New Year, is celebrated to mark the beginning of the Tamil calendar year. According to Tamil mythology, Lord Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, created the world on this day. Therefore, Puthandu is believed to signify the birth of a new era and the beginning of a new cycle of life. Puthandu is also significant because it marks the arrival of the harvest season and people usually celebrate the occasion by cleaning and decorating their homes, preparing special dishes, and wearing new clothes. It is a time for family gatherings, feasting, and sharing joy with loved ones.

Bihu is a set of three important non-religious festivals unique to the Indian state of Assam – 'Rongali' or 'Bohag Bihu' is the one observed in April. The Bohag Bihu coincides with the Assamese New year. Bihu is associated with agriculture, and rice in particular and Bohag Bihu is a sowing festival. Assamese celebrate the Bohag Bihu with feasts, music and dancing. Some hang brass, copper or silver pots on poles in front of their house, while children wear flower garlands then greet the new year as they pass through the rural streets.

Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most auspicious festivals for the Jain community. It marks the birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara (enlightened teacher) of the Jain religion. Jainism places great emphasis on achieving world peace and harmony in a manner that causes little to no harm to living beings. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a 2022 novel by Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka. It won’t the 2022 Booker Prize, the announcement being made at a ceremony at the Roundhouse in London on the 17th of October 2022. The New York Times review suggests that the novel “offers a very palatable combination of literary-political-ethical challenges, enjoyments and validations to its readers, including a sense of timeliness."
