Semester by the Sea ~ SoMAS in Southampton Non-marine science students at Stony Brook can earn a minor in marine science by enrolling in this program and taking one additional marine science course.

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences-Semester by the Sea is an immersive undergraduate program in marine sciences and maritime studies at Stony
Brook University's Southampton campus. Semester by the Sea is designed to immerse undergraduates from any college or university in a fall semester of marine studies at the Stony Brook-Southampton campus of Stony Brook University. The program uses

an experiential learning approach, taking full advantage of the Southampton Marine Science Center, its research vessels, its waterfront marine lab facilities, and the unique campus location on the shores of Shinnecock Bay for direct access to the Atlantic Ocean and nearby marine and coastal habitats. The program will also introduces students to the historic and contemporary maritime traditions of Southampton, Long Island, New York, and New England via classes and focused field trips to sites that have shaped these traditions. This program is best suited for upper level science majors (Marine Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Geology) as most courses require introductory biology as a prerequisite.
