USC Upstate Library

USC Upstate Library https://linktr.ee/uscupstatelibrary At that time the holdings of the library totaled 9,607. Construction of a new building began in 1976.

The University of South Carolina Upstate Library began in a small room located on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence in 1967. Increasing enrollment and lack of physical space, the Library was moved in the Spring of 1968 to the basement of what was formerly the Spartanburg County Health Department. The USC Upstate campus began in the fall of 1969 with one building

– the current Stockwell Administration Building. In addition to housing the Library, the building was designed for classrooms and office space. The project took one year to complete and classes were held in the building for the first time In January 1977. Over the years, the library has been remodeled as services and programs changed to meet the needs of the students. As of the 2014-2015 academic year, the library's volume count is 243,116 with more than 200 databases.

Fun Fact! Before we had chancellors, the title for this position was called director of the campus. Here is a Carolana yearbook page from 1969 with our very first campus director Dr. Norbert Stirzaker. He truly cared for the students, faculty, and staff during his time in this position.

The library is dedicating this week's Throwback Post with the debut of our new "Movie Anniversary Milestone Display!" This display includes movies from our collection that are reaching a anniversary milestone in 2026. The display will be up from May till mid-August and all the movies are available for checkout. The library also has external USB port DVD Drives for laptops if you don't have your own DVD player for checkout as well.
The second and third image for this post includes a list of all the movies available in our collection. If you don't a see a title from the list on the display don't worry. They are still available for checkout and will be rotated out and added to the display shelves throughout the summer.
The library will see you at the movies!

For this Throwback Thursday post, we wanted to share an article from an 1998 issue of the Carolinian newspaper. During the late 90s, the baseball team decided to compete in a mud-wrestling competition in order raise money for the team. The baseball team was suffering financially and came up with this solution. Hard to imagine that now because the baseball team has grown and thrived greatly over the years.

Today we wanted to share a page from the Carolana yearbook. It was exactly 50 years ago today on May 7, 1976, that the Hodge Center held its first graduation ceremony in this building. We thought this was a cool parallel as it is Graduation Day on USC Upstate’s campus. Congratulations and best of luck to the Class of 2026! Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!

For this Throwback Thursday Post, we wanted to share a Carolana yearbook page and photos that highlights the construction and the groundbreaking ceremony of the administration building. This was in 1968. Wild when you realize how much the campus has grown now 58 years later.

For this ThrowBack Thursday post we wanted to share a photo of one iteration of the Rifles Mascot. Here is a photo of "The Rifleman" mascot with campus cheerleaders from the 1990s. What are your thoughts about this mascot?

For this Throwback Thursday Post, we wanted to share an article from a 1999 issue of the Carolinian newspaper. This article highlights the library getting new vendor machines that make copies and could be accessed with Student IDs. Hard to believe that was 27 years ago. Our library service and equipment has come a long way and we still continue to thrive and grow today!
