Meet the Firms Accounting Career Fair brought incredible energy to JCBE, and the buzz carried through our halls well after it ended.

Our JCBE Welcome Back Ice Cream Social was a sweet success! 💚

Students, faculty, and staff gathered in the courtyard to kick off the new semester with ice cream, great conversation, and some JCBE swag giveaways. It was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the start of another exciting year.

We're excited to welcome Dr. Loran Jarrett to the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics, where she joins as Associate Professor of Marketing and will oversee our internship programs.

Dr. Jarrett brings 16 years of experience as a marketing practitioner alongside 10 years in higher education. Before transitioning fully into academia, she held leadership roles in agency, brand, and strategy work, including serving as Vice President at United Landmark Associates, where she contributed to campaigns for brands like Ritz-Carlton and Margaritaville. She also owned her own marketing agency for three years and is currently co-owner of BNG Hospitality alongside her husband, Tim.

At JCBE, she'll teach Intro to Marketing and Marketing Research, while leading our internship program and helping students connect marketing theory to real-world practice.

Dr. Jarrett's career has been marked by a deep commitment to student engagement and professional development — building mentorship initiatives, scholarship programs, and experiential learning opportunities throughout her career. She's a Tampa Bay Business Woman of the Year Finalist, a three-time Top Five Favorite PR/Marketing Practitioner, and served as President of her Leadership Tampa Bay 2016 class before joining its board. Since moving to Greenville in January 2025, she's continued that focus on leadership and community, including as a member of Leadership Greenville's 2026 class.

She holds dual undergraduate degrees from Florida State University, a master's degree from the University of Tampa, and a Doctorate of Business Administration from the University of South Florida.

Big week for our accounting and finance students!

Ahead of tomorrow's Meet the Firms Accounting Career Fair, JCBE hosted prep workshops to help students sharpen their resumes and refine their elevator pitches before meeting recruiters face-to-face.

Most people think of supply chain as warehouses, trucks, and manufacturing floors. Likeyvia Land spent her summer somewhere the supply chain looks completely different.

The JCBE Logistics and Supply Chain Management senior interned in the Purchasing Department at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, learning how a Just-in-Time facility operates with no warehouse at all. Every item, ordered precisely when it's needed. No buffer. No margin for error.

Under the guidance of mentor Kim Lawter, an RNI Specialist in Materials Management, and manager Rhonda Rice, Likeyvia built hands-on experience with the Infor Lawson ERP system, communicated and met with vendors, and got a real picture of how hospital supply chain keeps an entire healthcare operation running.

She already knows where she's headed: VP or Director of Supply Chain.

"I would love to work here in the future in the supply chain department," she says. "My team has been great making me feel welcome since day one and happy to help with things I may not know."

The goal is set. The work has started.

The George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics (JCBE) seeks applicants for part-time faculty positions in the Master of Business Analytics program in the following areas:

- Data Visualization (PowerBI)
- Data Mining and Management
- Quantitative Methods
- Predictive Analytics
- Machine Learning

In the letter of interest, please state your availability and experience with these teaching modes.

- Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree with work experience in analytics.
- Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in relevant discipline.
- Start Date: Fall 2026
- Position Type: Part-time / In-person

Courses may be assigned in two delivery modes:
- In-person during the day twice a week for 75 minutes- Online, asynchronously

Most transfer students figure this out by month three.
The ones who do it in month one get further, faster.

8 things to do in your first 30 days at JCBE:

1. Find one student organization and show up once
The hardest part of transferring is the social reset. You don't need to join everything, just show up once to one JCBE club. university Business society, Accounting and Econ/Finance Club, and many more. Once is enough to start.

2. Audit your transfer credits with your advisor
Don't assume your credits transferred correctly. Early in the semester book a meeting in with your advisor for week 4-6. Bring your old transcripts. Confirm which requirements are fulfilled and which aren't. You can connect with your advisor in Navigate360. Link in our Bio.

3. Update your LinkedIn with USC Upstate and JCBE
Do this before recruiters start searching in September and February. Add your major, expected graduation, and any relevant coursework. Alumni search LinkedIn by school, be findable.

4. Visit the Career Management Services and update your resume
Your old resume reflects your old school. Update it now: new institution, any new coursework. Also ask about internship deadlines, many spring deadlines are in October. Schedule an appointment. Link in our Bio.

5. Map out your path to graduation — in writing
Build a semester-by-semester plan with your advisor. Which courses each semester? When do you take your capstone? Any summer options? A written plan reduces anxiety and prevents scheduling mistakes. Book a separate meeting with your advisor for mid-semester to map out the plan.

6. Connect with at least one JCBE alumni on LinkedIn
Search ""USC Upstate"" + your target industry. Send a short, specific message: ""I'm a transfer student in JCBE interested in [field]. Would you be open to a 15-minute conversation?"" Most say yes, but most students never ask.

7. Find a mentor.
Career Management can help you connect with experienced professional in the field you are considering working in. This person can provide invaluable advice on what companies are looking for in your potential industry and profession.

8. Save the dates and attend Career Management Events.
Timely advice and information that could give you an edge on finding out information on your next job or internship.

Asia Green graduated from JCBE this spring, and her first chapter after the degree is serving the community she studied in.

This summer, Asia is an intern at the Spartanburg County Register of Deeds Department, learning how government document management works from the inside: reviewing and recording legal documents, completing indexing, and processing mortgage files. She sits with different team members throughout the day to get a full picture of everything the department handles.

What she didn't expect was how much the culture would matter.

"I enjoy how my department feels like a family and how everyone is always willing to help one another. The communication, community engagement, and opportunity to help others have all been amazing experiences for me," Asia shares.

She graduated in May and she's already doing meaningful work in Spartanburg.

JCBE students: mark your calendars. The Meet the Firms Accounting Career Fair returns on Thursday, September 3rd from 4-6 PM on the 1st floor of the Johnson College of Business and Economics.

This event connects students with accounting firms actively recruiting talent, and while it's traditionally geared toward accounting majors, finance and economics students are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.
