Today on Native American Day, we're highlighting BHSU Center for American Indian Studies, which helps create opportunities for learning, cultural engagement, and meaningful conversations throughout the year. The Center promotes awareness of Indigenous cultures and perspectives while supporting students and building connections with tribal communities.

One upcoming opportunity is the guest lecture "Kapemni: Twisting Between Worlds" with 2026 SURF Artist-in-Residence Rachel Berg, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, on Oct. 15. Drawing on Oceti Sakowin creation stories and star knowledge, Berg explores the intersections of art, science, spirit, and land. Centered on He Sapa (the Black Hills), her work examines the complex histories held within the land and invites audiences to consider new ways of understanding knowledge, place, healing, and our relationship to the universe. Featured with this post is Berg's artwork, "As Above, So Below."

Date: Oct. 15, 2026
Time: 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Location: Jonas 107

The event is hosted by the Center for American Indian Studies, and Berg's accompanying exhibit will open that evening in the Ruddell Gallery.

In observance of Native American Day, BHSU offices are closed and classes are not in session today.

Inspired by watching her mom build and manage her own business, BHSU senior Abigail Scott has always been interested in pursuing a career in business.

This summer, Abigail put that interest into practice through an internship with InovaSkin, where she created social media content and helped communicate complex scientific concepts to consumer audiences.

With support from BHSU's Career Development Center and College of Business, Abigail connected with the opportunity and gained valuable real-world experience applying the skills she learned in the classroom.

"As a student, I would encourage others to try new things that put them outside of their comfort zone," Abigail said. "It has made me a more well-rounded student, and that looks better to employers in the future as well."

Experiences like this help Yellow Jackets gain career-ready skills, build industry connections, and prepare for successful futures. Read more about Abigail's story here: https://bhsu.edu/news/2026/10/inova-skin-internship.html
