In the tradition set forth by Zeta’s Five Pearls, another group of women recognized the need for an enthusiastic, civic minded graduate chapter in Speedway, Indiana. Mu Tau Zeta was charted on April 26, 1984. It held its chartering ceremony in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Region. Five women participated in the chartering ceremony which was conducted by Lizzie Miller (th
en Great Lakes Regional Director) and Ida A Gamble (then Indiana State Director). These women are Beryl Borel, Effie Burford, Norma Dartis, Yvonne Heflin, and Jean Woodard. Soror Ida B King, who had held many national positions, from Gary, Indiana, was also in attendance. It is with great zeal and sisterly love that Mu Tau Zeta continues to promote the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta through cultural, educational, and civic programs in our community. The chapter participates with March of Dimes, the American Diabetes Association, Riverside Community Center, the 500 Festival, and the United Negro College Fund yearly. All members of Mu Tau Zeta are unique individuals who seek out other like minded women interested in upholding the standards and traditions of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
