Congratulations to the three UW Presidential Scholars in Spokane!

This scholarship recognizes high school students who “use their talent and creativity to innovate on behalf of their communities…” This could mean “creating a new organization [or] program”, “filling a gap in a political [or] scientific field”, or “developing new platforms to advocate for change.” The scholarship awards each student $10,000 annually, for up to four years, throughout their attendance at the University of Washington.

This year, only 15 students within the Washington state received this prestigious award. We couldn’t be prouder of these Spokane students and celebrate them as they continue to pursue their educational endeavors.

Today, we were visited by Polo Hernandez, newly appointed member of the UW Board of Regents. He had the opportunity to tour our facilities and meet with representatives from Gonzaga School of Health Sciences, UW School of Medicine - Gonzaga University Health Partnership and UW Regional Affairs & RIDE. He was overall impressed with the work we are doing, especially in rural health and dental care, and hopes to join us in furthering the UW's commitment to the Eastern Washington region.

The UW Spokane RIDE program held their open house/ribbon-cutting ceremony this past week to celebrate the completion of their new facilities in the UW-GU Health Partnership Building. UW Provost, Tricia R. Serio, and UWSOD dean, Dr. Andre Ritter, had the privilege of cutting the purple ribbon.

In reflection of the ribbon-cutting, Provost Serio told The Spokesman Review, “This (Regional Initiative in Dental Education) program is absolutely unique in the country because it creates space for dental students to actually do part of their training in the eastern part of the state, and they have access to rural and underserved communities through 57 clinical sites.” She continued, “It’s a real opportunity for students to be trained in a different way than traditional dental school, and it’s amazingly successful.”
