"Our department as a whole is moving in the direction of what’s called community engaged learning, which is the idea that students learn best in scenarios where they’re working with real clients on real problems."

That's a quote from Scott Griffith, associate professor of computer science and mathematics, and the man behind the new Serving Humanity with Computing class. We are so proud to see it featured in The Inlander as part of its special Scholastic Fantastic issue. It is FANTASTIC and unique and it absolutely demonstrates the way we do "Mind-and-Heart" here at Whitworth.

Aspiring computer scientists learn to craft algorithms and software systems more complex than most internet users could ever understand, yet their class loads often lack the human connection that’s so

History is being made in several ways at The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture in Spokane!

Meredith Shimizu '93, professor of art & design, is curating an exhibit at the MAC, and four art history majors are working on the project with her.

The exhibition called "An Eye for Detail" features 20 small European paintings from 1500-1900 from a private collection in Spokane. This is the first time the museum has showcased oil paintings from this era. You can read all about the exhibit and the work our students are doing here: https://bit.ly/4wSOfiq

The exhibit runs through Aug. 23. We thank Rachel Allen, the MAC's curator of modern and contemporary art, for involving Whitworth in such a wonderful exhibit!

Congratulations to Jordyn Bennett ’27, who has been named a finalist for the prestigious U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program in Swahili!

Bennett will travel to Tanzania in June for an intensive, two-month language and cultural immersion experience. She is one of fewer than 30 students nationwide selected for the highly competitive Swahili program. Way to go, Jordyn! Your dedication to global learning and cultural connection makes us incredibly proud!

Because of generous One Pine Day donors, environmental science and biology students gave new life to an eroded hillside on Whitworth’s campus this spring while gaining hands-on experience! Students in Professor Grant Casady’s Global Change Ecology course planned the restoration project throughout the semester and put it into action in late April by laying erosion control mats and planting native grasses. We thank Professor Casady, his students and every donor who funded this effort for helping us be faithful stewards of creation here on campus.

What Is It Like? | Kinesiology

Mikayla Buckley ’27, a kinesiology and secondary education double major, shares about studying kinesiology at Whitworth:

“I chose to study kinesiology because I’m interested in coaching and want to have knowledge on more than just the sport itself. Knowing about how the body functions will help me be a better, more aware coach. I want to coach high school cross country and/or track & field, while also teaching health or fitness.

“Some of my favorite classes so far have been Sports Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Functional Anatomy & Applied Biomechanics. Sports psych taught me more about the mental side of athletics, while A&P and biomechanics taught me about many of the physical aspects that work together in movement.

“Something that has surprised me about my major is the variety of classes just under kinesiology. I’ve gotten to learn about the body, coaching specifically, and some mental aspects involved in coaching.

“I’d describe Whitworth as a close-knit community where there are all kinds of ways to get involved in things and meet people. … Three people who have made a difference in my time at Whitworth so far have been Coach Toby [Schwarz], [Professor of Kinesiology & Athletics] Kirk Westre, and [Campus Pastor] Forest Buckner. All of these people have made my experience more enjoyable by making me feel welcome, providing different kinds of life wisdom and helping me grow my faith.”

Meet the Belonging Ambassadors, a dynamic new team of student leaders here at Whitworth that will help our students find their people and their place.

Through real stories, interactive events and one-on-one connections, they'll help guide our students when it comes to building friendships, discovering passions, and feeling seen, heard and valued. This amazing squad of peer-trained young adults will literally show up, in and out of the classroom, to offer support to our students and help them feel a connection. Because when our students belong, they flourish and thrive, and that's all we could ever ask for!
