“I like figuring out how things work. I like understanding things at a molecular level and seeing the effects on a larger scale. Science is applicable to everyday life and helps me better understand the world around me. Biochemistry will allow me to later study medicine, which means I will be able to help a lot of people. There is no combination of words that would adequately describe the gratitude I have for the people who are making my education possible. My education will make me a better, well-rounded person who has the ability to make a difference in this world.”

Senior. Major: Biochemistry. Goal: Medicine.

Gonzaga Student Body Association Vice President:
"There used to be six bathtubs in the U.S. Senate and people like President Howard Taft would bathe in them all the time. But then they removed them all from the Capital, they were nowhere to be found, and there were rumors that there was one last bathtub left. It's a marble bathtub that's lined with gold, very detailed, and it is beautiful! So during the summer between my freshman and sophomore year, I interned for a congresswoman in D.C. I talked to different staff members, chiefs of staff, and no one knew where it was so I started wondering if this thing even exists or if it's just a prank. One day, I was talking to a janitor and asked him if he knew where it was. He said, 'Can you keep a secret?' He lead me down to the basement of the Capital building, then one more floor down, and then leads me to this maintenance closet and down another flight of stairs. He brings me into this room and there are these two wooden salon doors and he tells me to go back behind them. I open the doors and there is the bathtub in all its glory. It was the best thing I have ever seen. I sat in the same bathtub that President Howard Taft actually sat in."

Gonzaga Student Body Association President Taylor Kratochvil

"A couple of years ago, it was getting into the end of the fourth week of school, it was the weekend, and my buddies and I were listening to country music in Desmet before going out. All of a sudden, I just got this feeling of being really really homesick. I left the room without saying anything, went into my room, and just started crying because I felt so incredibly homesick. I sat there in silence for about five minutes and listened to the planes fly overhead wishing to hop on one and go home to see my family and friends. Right about then, the five guys that I currently still live with, all came into my room, gave me a hug and said, 'Come on buddy. We are going back over there. It's going to be okay.'
Everyone says that their favorite part of GU is the community, but I would argue that it would be hard-pressed to find another place where so many people genuinely care about one another. It's beyond just holding doors open for people. If you are walking around campus and you don't quite have the same glow that you normally would, chances are someone is going to notice and ask how you are holding up. That's the embodiment of what makes Gonzaga special."

Senior. Major: Biology, Minor: Spanish. Dream to be a Pediatrician.

"I like being an ambassador because I like sharing my knowledge of the school with people. I like telling them what Gonzaga has to offer because I think there are things at GU like the Career Center, ZagTrax, GAMP and other opportunities they have to offer that students don't always take advantage of or even realize that they are here for them. It allows students to successfully network and obtain a job before they even graduate college. The thing I love most about Gonzaga is this perfect balance between school rigor and the escapes they offer outside of the classroom. Whether it's Ski/Snowboard club, club sports, intramurals or academic clubs, there is always a release from your studies that GU offers. They allow students to meet other students in different classes and get a healthy escape from the classroom."

Senior. Major: Human Physiology. Goal: Physical Therapist.

"My deafness brought a set of challenges to the online format of the M.A. in Communication & Leadership Studies (COML) program. With the help from Gonzaga’s DREAM (Disability Resources, Education, & Access Management) office I was able to tear down the audiological barriers of spoken language. The DREAM office transcribed podcasts and videos as well as provided ASL interpretation for my on-campus visits and my thesis defense. I felt like Gonzaga truly cared about me.

Once I completed the COML program my teaching career took off. I was immediately offered a position at Iowa State University teaching American Sign Language. In my personal life the program’s impact has not gone unnoticed. I find myself more willing to listen, to serve, to accept others as they are, to influence people and gain new friend."

"How do you feel about graduating on Sunday?"

"I feel numb right now but it probably won't hit me until the day of graduation or until after that. Right now, I am glad it's numb to me because I am kind of living in the moment and enjoying everyone around me. I consider my friends here to be my family now...My favorite part of Gonzaga is how the school gets better by the years and how everyone comes together to become one community. It's really cheesy, but it's so true. It just keeps getting better and better. I can honestly say I am so glad I decided to stay here for all four years. I think in order to have a successful school you have to have a successful community...If I could give any advice to the students it would be to be a 'yes-man'. Always take the opportunity to say yes because you don't know who you will meet or what experience you will have on a certain trip. You won't find out until you say yes and take the plunge."

Senior. Major: Economics & Political Science. Goal: To be happy in life.

"Today is Zags Give Day! It is our second 24-hour all-out giving day blitz for Gonzaga. We are looking for 1,000 donors to support scholarships, Florence, CCASL, student clubs, athletics...you name it and you can give to it. Everyone should give to Gonzaga because it's changing the world for the better through the students that get educated here. Jesuit education is something that is so unique and creates character driven leaders to make a difference. A gift supports a student getting here and flourishing here."

Director of the Annual Campaign.

"My seniors just turned in their final research thesis papers which is supposed to be the capstone of their Communication Studies Major. At the beginning of the semester, I told them to write about something that really bothers them and so they wrote 20-pages on something that mattered to them. I am really proud about that because I think a lot of times when you are going through the curriculum and you're just trying to pass the class you're not really thinking about your identity as a student. I get to read topics that range from, life after love online in the digital space, to food culture, to the use of the n-word in different cultures. It's great to see the diversity of thought that happens in this program. I have faith in this class that they are going to make the world better in a lot of different ways."

Assistant Professor, Communications Studies.

"I grew up on the Northside of Spokane. Growing up in Spokane, I had actually never been on campus until I took a tour my senior year of high school. For the most part, I stayed on the Northside for most of my life so it's nice coming here because it's very different from where I grew up...In high school, I did not do anything out of my comfort zone and coming to Gonzaga was very much out of my comfort zone because I came here not knowing anyone. I applied for a random roommate and met a few people through training camp. The biggest thing for me was going somewhere where I didn't know anyone. Gonzaga has definitely helped me branch out and I know that if I went to another school I wouldn't have branched out as much."

Junior. Major: Human Physiology. Goal: Graduate School.
